Nagy honored by Samaritan's Feet

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Samaritan's Feet named South Dakota State head men's basketball coach Scott Nagy as its winner of the 2012 Barefoot Coach of the Year on Thursday, and plans to honors him on Saturday in New Orleans at the Legends of the Hardwood Breakfast, which recognizing coaches who demonstrate character, leadership, courage and compassion.

 "I have traveled with Coach Nagy to Zimbabwe and saw first-hand his humble spirit and his willingness to help the impoverished," President and Founder of Samaritan's Feet Manny Ohonme said, "Coach Nagy's humility is amazing and the influence that he has on young people is contagious. It's my honor to recognize him for his efforts for children around the world." 

Nagy teamed up with Samaritan's Feet in each of the last three seasons to raise money and shoes for children around the world, including Haiti, especially after a major earthquake shook the country on Jan. 12, 2010.

"My wife Jamie and I adopted our daughter Naika from Haiti, so we've seen first-hand the need for shoes there," Nagy said.

Nagy raised over $6,000 for the relief efforts in Haiti after the devastating 2010 earthquake, and then took it to another level last season, when the entire Jackrabbit coaching staff coached in their bare feet against IPFW on Jan. 22, to raise money for shoes and shelters in Zimbabwe.

Nagy made it four years in a row this season when he coached barefoot in an 85-58 win over UMKC in Frost Arena on Jan. 14, and added a game on Feb. 18, when he coached in his bare feet in the Jacks nationally televised 86-65 win over Buffalo in the SEARS BracketBusters.

Through his barefoot efforts, Nagy provided a voice for the voiceless, created awareness for Samaritan's Feet and raised over $10,000, which provided 1,000 pairs of shoes to impoverished children in the United States and around the world.
