MINNEAPOLIS — Freshman Kayce Smith was victorious in the 200 breaststroke and the Jackrabbit 800 freestyle relay team also turned in a first-place finish to lead the South Dakota State University women's swimming and diving team on the final of competition Saturday at the Minnesota Challenge.

A native of Madison, Wis., Smith won the 200 breaststroke in Saturday's evening session with a time of 2 minutes, 25.82 seconds. Two of her teammates also finished in the top six as Jessie Hendricks and Paige Weisz came in fifth and sixth with respective times of 2:31.24 and 2:34.52. Earlier in the day, Smith placed third in the 100-yard race in 1:07.25.

The 800 freestyle relay team of Devonne Dalin, Andrea Budahl, Kelsey Boucher and Abby Zenner wrapped up Saturday's morning session by winning the race in a time of 8:15.42 - nearly 11 seconds faster than the next-closest squad. Budahl added a fourth-place individual performance in the 400 individual medley, 4:46.51.

The Jackrabbits also received strong performances in the 1,650 freestyle from a pair of swimmers. Emma Gaulke-Janowski took second in 17:51.65, with Boucher finishing third in 18:20.71.

Lisa Newberger and Olivia Olesiak rounded out the top-five finishes for the Jackrabbit women. Newberger placed fifth in the 200 backstroke, 2:16.18, while Olesiak finished fifth in 1-meter diving with a score of 229.60.

The Jackrabbits will be in training until the Summit League Championships Feb. 20-23 in Rochester, Mich.
