The South Dakota State women’s tennis team was bested 4-0 by Kansas City in the second women’s semifinal on Friday night in Fort Wayne, Ind.

The teams played late into the night at Dr. Rudy and Rhonda Kachmann Tennis Center, under the lights and in the cold, on the campus of Fort Wayne.

In the first semifinal of the day, top-seeded and host Fort Wayne defeated fourth-seeded South Dakota 4-0.

The scoreboard listed a shutout, but it was anything but easy, as three matches were late in the second set and possibly headed for a third when decision was reached.

The Jacks jumped out to an early lead at two doubles positions, but the Kangaroos bounced back for the team point.

Jenny Blackburne and Ffion Davies played versus Laura Bouet and Eva Dalvai at No. 1. The ‘Roos broke twice early for a quick lead. Blackburne and Davies battled back, but were unable to even the match and Kansas City won 8-4.

In the second doubles match, Tacy Haws-Lay and Brooke Henry were on top from the get-go versus Amelie Amsallem and Suzan Lisenby. The duo broke twice in the early going and led by three games at one point in the match. Kansas City broke back late in the match to even the score and broke again for the 9-7 win.

Florencia Magni and Beatriz Souza controlled the No. 3 match versus Gabby Pintos and Maddie Schulte from its onset. Like the middle team, the duo broke twice for the early lead and made it stand for a convincing 8-4 win.

In singles, all matches were on serve early, but the ‘Roos separated from the Jacks as the matches continued.

Florencia Magni and Bouet played at the top spot and were even early, but Bouet pulled away in the first set for a 6-2 win. Kansas City scored its first singles point after a 6-1 win in the second set.

Ffion Davies and Dimitra Stavrianakou were matched at No. 2. Davies required a medical timeout prior to the match, but was able to continue after treatment. Stavrianakou broke for an early lead and won the first set 6-1. The 'Roos won the second set 6-0 for its second singles point.

In the No. 3 match, Jenny Blackburne and Dalvai battled on serve through the first set. The two were on serve until late in the set, when Blackburne broke and held serve for a 6-4 win. The match was unfinished in the second set, on serve.

Beatriz Souza and Schulte also battled on serve throughout the first set at No. 4. The two were on serve until the end of the set, when Souza broke for a 6-4 win. Souza trailed 5-3 in the second set, but the match was unfinished.

Tacy Haws-Lay played Suzan Lisenby tough in the first few games at No. 5, but Lisenby broke serve midway through the first set and won 6-3. Haws-Lay rebounded in the second set and led 5-1, but it was the final unfinished match of the night.

In the final spot, Tiffany Filipovich faced Amelie Amsallem. Amsallem controlled the first set with a 6-1 win. Filipovich did not go out without a fight, however, coming from behind to even the second set at 4-4. Unfortunately for the Jacks, Amsallem won the next two games to close out the match and the meet.

SDSU finished the regular season with a 15-10 overall record, but made school history with its first trip to the postseason. The Jacks earned two all-league honorees, including the first Newcomer of the Year award.
