South Dakota State trailed by as many as many as nine points behind a barrage of 3-pointers from Dakota Wesleyan on Friday, but the Jackrabbits took the lead back on a Zach Horstman layup with just under five minutes to play in the first half and never trailed again in a 96-73 exhibition win.

The Jackrabbits pushed the first half lead to six points before taking a 48-44 lead with them into the locker room behind 20 points from Brayden Carlson, who finished the game with 23 points to lead all players in the game.

SDSU continued fend off the DWU 3-pointers in the second half to build on its lead in to 30 points on a Cory Jacobsen layup with 4:45 left to play.

The Tigers shot 12-of-27 from deep in the first half, 33 percent, but cooled off in the second half to shoot 17-for-47 from long range in the game, 36 percent. SDSU went 8-for-21 from deep in the game, 38 percent, making four in each half.

In addition to Carlson’s game-high 23 points, the Jacks got 15 from Chad White, 14 from Jordan Dykstra and 11 from Marcus Heemstra. Horstman finished with four and Jacobsen seven points.

Both Heemstra and Cody Larson led the Jackrabbits with seven rebounds in the win.

A trio of Tigers all finished with 12 points in the loss; Jalen Voss, Trae Bergh and Matt Henriksen all scored a dozen, with Luke Bamberg adding 11 points. Voss also tied for game-high honors with 11 rebounds.

With their lone exhibition contest in the books, the Jackrabbits now start preparing for the regular season next week.

“This is it, I told the players that we have four practices before we play,” head coach Scott Nagy said after the win. “We know the teams we’ll be playing will be a lot more talented and we should matchup better with them defensively according to their size, but when you look at San Diego, they have a 5-7 point guard and a six feet tall two guard, and so we’re going to have to chase those guys around and get them off the three and do a really good job.”

The Jacks open the regular season with two games at the USD Classic next weekend in San Diego, starting with the host Toreros on Friday at 7 p.m. PT, followed by a game against Loyola Marymount on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. PT.
