Jacks Open Summit League Play Thursday
The South Dakota State women’s basketball team (9-7, 0-0) begins its seventh season of Summit Leauge play Thursday when it hosts IUPUI (10-5, 0-0) at 7 p.m. in the friendly confines of Frost Arena.
The Jackrabbits will be protecting the nation’s 18th-longest home winning streak and looking to snap a three-game losing streak. SDSU dropped to 1-2 vs. ranked teams when it lost at No. 2/2 Notre Dame, 94-51, Jan. 2.
The Jaguars enter Thursday’s game on a modest two-game winning streak after beating Youngstown State, 66-57, Jan. 4 in Ohio.
South Dakota State is ranked 19th in the latest CollegeInsider Mid-Major poll.

-South Dakota State begins a two-game home-stand Thursday. It sports a 10-game home winning streak, dating to last season.
-SDSU begins its seventh Summit League season and owns an 89-17 record in league play. The Jacks have won their last three Summit League regular-season games, dating to a 61-52 win at Western Illinois Feb. 16, 2013.
-South Dakota State is also 47-6 all-time at home (.886 winning percentage) in Summit League contests.
-The Jackrabbits are 4-2 overall and 2-1 in Frost Arena in Summit League openers. They are 2-0 in their last two openers.
-SDSU enters the contest looking to score more points than it did in its previous five games. The Jacks averaged 58.8 points while IUPUI has scored at a 70-point clip in its last five outings.
-The Jaguars are 5-2 on the road this season.
-IUPUI takes pride in its defense, allowing opponents just 60.7 points per game, ranking first in the Summit League. Only three foes have scored more than 70 points this season.
A Quick Glance at South Dakota State
-Head coach Aaron Johnston’s probable starters vs. IUPUI are senior Hannah Strop (3.1 ppg, 4.6 rpg), junior forward Mariah Clarin (8.1 ppg, 6.8 rpg), junior guards Megan Waytashek (11.7 ppg, 3.9 rpg), Gabrielle Boever (5.8 ppg, 2.9 apg) and senior guard Steph Paluch (9.3 ppg, 2.2 rpg). The lineup sports a 8-6 record.
nWaytashek has scored in double figures in 10 of 16 games, and seven other Jacks have posted double-digit scoring games. Waytashek, junior Megan Stuart and freshman Kerri Young have SDSU’s only 20-plus point games this season. Clarin recorded the Jacks’ second double-double with 13 points and 15 rebounds at Wis.-Green Bay Dec. 7.
-SDSU is shooting 39.7 percent from the field, 33.6 percent from three-point range and 70 percent from the free-throw line. The Jacks are also averaging 66.2 points per game and limiting opponents to 67.1 points per game.
-The Jacks have a deep squad with 10 players averaging at least 13 minutes per game. Their bench averages 27.6 points per outing this season.
-IUPUI is 10-5 on the season, winning three of its last four games. In their last outing, the Jaguars beat Youngstown State, 66-57, in Ohio Jan. 4.
-The Jags were picked second behind the Jackrabbits in The Summit League’s annual preseason poll. Senior guard DeAirra Goss was named to the preseason first team and senior guard Dee-Dee Bellamy picked up second team honors.
-The Jags have two players averaging double figures in scoring. Goss leads the team in scoring (11.8) while Nevena Markovic averages 11.4.
-Markovic grabs a team-high 6.0 rebounds for IUPUI, and Dawn Luster dishes 3.0 assists per game.
-IUPUI is shooting 44.9 percent from the field, 30.3 percent from three-point range and 67.4 percent from the free-throw line.
-The Jags return three starters, nine letterwinners, and added six newcomers.
-Thursday’s game will be the 15th meeting between SDSU and IUPUI. The Jacks lead the series 12-2 and had a 12-game winning streak vs. the Jags snapped last year when they lost the two-game series. The Jacks lost 70-60, Feb. 14 in Indianapolis, and, 57-56, Jan. 19, in Frost Arena.
-Junior Megan Waytashek averaged 13.5 points and 3.0 assists while shooting 44.4 percent from the field in three games vs. the Jags. Classmate Gabby Boever averaged 7.4 points and 3.0 assists in five outings against IUPUI.
