Jackrabbits win on Senior Night
The South Dakota State frontcourt trio of Jennie Sunnarborg, Kristin Rotert and Katie Lingle combined for 40 points, leading the Jackrabbit women's basketball team to a 62-47 victory over IUPUI Monday night at Frost Arena.
In playing their final home game of the season, the Jackrabbits evened their overall record at 13-13 and improved to 9-6 in league play. IUPUI dropped its 15th consecutive game, falling to 3-21 overall, 1-13 in The Summit League.
The Jackrabbits established their inside presence early, scoring their first 19 points in the paint or at the free throw line. After trailing by as many as 10 points in the opening minutes, IUPUI pulled to within 19-16 on a three-pointer by Gretchen Gaskin with 6 minutes and 24 seconds to play in the half.
SDSU struck quickly with an 11-0 run over the next two and a half minutes. Rotert, Jill Young and Tara Heiser all connected from three-point range during the spurt. The Jackrabbits led 36-22 at the break.
Sunnarborg scored the first five points of the second half with a layup and three-pointer to push the Jackrabbit lead to the largest of the night at 19 points. Young's second three-pointer of the night moments later gave SDSU a 48-30 advantage, but the Jackrabbit offense stalled over a six-minute span.
IUPUI took advantage, reeling off an 11-0 run to close to within seven at 48-41 with 6:21 to play.
The Jackrabbits, however, re-established the inside game, sparking a 12-4 run to put the game out of reach.
Sunnarborg led the Jackrabbits with 16 points and seven rebounds. A senior from Salem, Rotert tallied 13 points - 11 of which came in the first half. Lingle continued her strong play in the post with 11 points.
SDSU finished the game 23-fo-51 from the field, 45.1 percent, including 5-of-19 from three-point range. The Jackrabbits struggled from the free throw line in the second half and finished the game 11-of-20, 55 percent.
The Jaguars received 10 points each from guards Gretchen Gaskin and Del'Niqua Bellamy. Janna Eichelberger paced IUPUI's 41-33 rebounding advantage with a game-high nine boards.
From the field, IUPUI ended the night 19-of-55, 34.5 percent, including 4-of-11 on threes. The Jaguars attempted only nine free throws, making five for 55.6 percent.
Turnovers also played a key role in the game as IUPUI committed 20, while SDSU tied a season low with 11.
The Jackrabbits open a three-game road swing to end the regular season with a Saturday matinee at Oakland. Tipoff is set for 3:30 p.m. Eastern Time (2:30 p.m. Central) in Rochester, Mich.
