             BROOKINGS, S.D. — With one Summit League game in the win column, the South Dakota State women’s basketball team (10-7, 1-0) tries for a second when it hosts Fort Wayne (8-7, 1-0) Saturday at 4 p.m. in the friendly confines of Frost Arena.

            The Jackrabbits will be protecting the nation’s 17th-longest home winning streak and looking for their second league win Saturday. SDSU won its Summit League season and home opener Thursday with a 63-57 win over IUPUI.

            The Mastodons enter Saturday’s game after a thrilling game at North Dakota State Thursday. They beat the Bison 98-89 in double overtime.

            South Dakota State is ranked 24th in the latest CollegeInsider Mid-Major poll.

-South Dakota State sports an 11-game home winning streak, dating to last season, and a perfect 8-0 mark this year in Frost Arena.

-SDSU sits atop the Summit League standings with Fort Wayne entering Saturday’s contest. With a win, the Jackrabbits would be 2-0 in league play and one game ahead of their opponents.

-South Dakota State is also 48-6 all-time at home (.888 winning percentage) in Summit League contests.

-The Mastodons are 4-4 on the road this season.

-SDSU enters the contest looking to score more points than it did in its previous five games. The Jacks averaged 54 points while Fort Wayne has scored at a 90.8-point clip in its last five outings. But the Mastodons have also given up 72.2 points to their opponents and the Jacks’ last five foes have only scored at a 65.2 clip.


-Head coach Aaron Johnston’s probable starters vs. Fort Wayne are senior Hannah Strop (3.3 ppg, 4.8 rpg), junior forward Mariah Clarin (7.8 ppg, 6.6 rpg), junior guards Megan Waytashek (11.5 ppg, 3.9 rpg), Gabrielle Boever (6.0 ppg, 2.8 apg) and senior guard Steph Paluch (9.0 ppg, 2.0 rpg). The lineup sports a 9-6 record.

-Waytashek has scored in double figures in 10 of 17 games, and seven other Jacks have posted double-digit scoring games. Waytashek, junior Megan Stuart and freshman Kerri Young have SDSU’s only 20-plus point games this season. Clarin recorded the Jacks’ second double-double with 13 points and 15 rebounds at Wis.-Green Bay Dec. 7.

-SDSU is shooting 39.6 percent from the field, 33.3 percent from three-point range and 69.8 percent from the free-throw line. The Jacks are also averaging 66.1 points per game and limiting opponents to 66.5 points per game.

-The Jacks have a deep squad with eight players averaging at least 13 minutes per game. Their bench averages 27.8 points per outing this season.


-Fort Wayne is 8-7 overall, 1-0 in Summit League play and 4-4 on the road this season after beating at North Dakota State Thursday, 98-89 in double overtime.

-The Mastodons were picked fourth in The Summit League’s annual preseason poll. Senior guard/forward Amanda Hyde was selected as the Preseason Player of the Year after earning Player of the Year and first team All-Summit League honors last year. Junior Haley Seibert picked up second team honors.

-Fort Wayne has two players averaging double figures in scoring. Hyde leads the team in scoring (22.9) while Seibert averages 13.1 points per game.

-Hyde grabs a team-high 5.7 rebounds and dishes 3.2 assists per game for Fort Wayne.

-Fort Wayne is shooting 47 percent from the field, 39 percent from three-point range and 75 percent from the free-throw line.

-The Mastodons enter Saturday’s game having made a three-point field goal in 450 straight contests, a stretch that ranks as the third-longest active streak in NCAA Division I.

-Fort Wayne returns four starters, 12 letterwinners, and adds four freshmen.


-It will be the 22nd meeting between SDSU and Fort Wayne in women’s basketball. The Jacks lead the series 20-1, holds the series lead in Summit League games, 11-1 and won the first 18 games. The Mastodons’ lone win was a 70-67 overtime victory Jan. 22, 2011, at Frost Arena. 

-The ‘Dons are 1-7 all-time in Frost Arena and have never scored more than 72 points in the series.

-SDSU won all three meetings last year. In the first game, the Jacks won 66-64 Jan. 12 in Fort Wayne. In Frost Arena, SDSU won 72-62 Feb. 7, and in the Summit League Championship, the Jackrabbits eliminated the Mastodons, 86-59, March. 11. 

-In last year’s Summit League semi-final game, five Jackrabbits scored in double figures led by Ashley Eide’s 16 points.

-SDSU has eliminated the Mastodons from the Summit League postseason tournament each of the past three seasons.

-Junior Megan Waytashek averaged 18 points and 6.5 rebounds while shooting 51.9 percent from the field in her three games vs. the Mastodons. Classmate Gabby Boever averaged 7.0 points and 3.0 assists in six outings against Fort Wayne.
