Jacks’ Bench Comes Through Again

BROOKINGS, S.D. — The South Dakota State bench came through again as the Jackrabbits (11-7, 2-0) defeated Fort Wayne (10-7, 1-1), 77-60, in Summit League women’s basketball action Saturday in front of 2,044 fans in Frost Arena.

The Jackrabbits’ bench scored 54 points lead by freshman Kerri Young’s (Mitchell) team-high 18 points on 8-of-9 shooting from the field. Junior Megan Stuart (Roseville, Minn.) added 16 points, shooting 6 for 10 from the floor, while senior Tara Hesier (Watertown) scored 11 points and had a game-high six assists. Senior Steph Paluch (Pierre) grabbed a season- and game-high seven rebounds.

The win extends the Jackrabbits’ home-win streak to 12 games, dating to last season.

IPFW’s Amanda Hyde made 8 of 12 from the field, including four three-pointers, to score a game-high 26 points. Haley Seibert added 16 points and a team-best seven rebounds.

Fort Wayne opened the game with a 14-0 run fueled by four three-pointers, including three from Hyde. SDSU started 0 for 7 from the field with six turnovers, before going 8 for 11 from the field and taking an 18-17 lead with 7:02 left.

The Jackrabbits then outscored the Mastodons 14-8 the rest of the half to take a 32-25 lead. SDSU shot 50 percent from the field, hitting 13 of 26 shots, including scoring 24 points in the paint in the first half.

After a three-pointer from IPFW’s Rachel Mauk opened the second-half scoring, South Dakota State went on a 20-4 run to take a 20-point lead, 52-32, with 12:15 to play. Young and freshman Chynna Stevens (Clark) each scored four points and Hesier added a three-pointer during the run.

Young sank a three-pointer with 2:44 left to give the Jacks their largest lead of the game, 75-48.

SDSU shot a season-high 51.7 percent from the field, making 30 of 58. The Jacks outrebounded IPFW, 42-26, and outscored the ‘Dons in the paint, 50-12.

South Dakota State begins a three-game road swing Jan. 16 when it travels to Macomb, Ill., to take on Western Illinois at 7 p.m.
