Jacks on the Road at Omaha

            BROOKINGS, S.D. — Riding a three-game winning streak, the South Dakota State women’s basketball team (12-7, 3-0) continues its three-game road swing Saturday when it travels to Omaha, Neb., to take on Omaha (9-7, 1-1) at 2 p.m. in Sapp Fieldhouse.

            The Jackrabbits snapped a three-game road losing streak Thursday with a thrilling 67-66 win at Western Illinois. Senior Steph Paluch made the game-winning layup with four seconds left.

            The Mavericks enter Saturday’s game on a winning note after beating North Dakota State, 66-48, Thursday.

            South Dakota State is ranked 24th in the latest CollegeInsider Mid-Major poll.

-South Dakota State leads The Summit League with a 3-0 record. The Jacks also started 3-0 the last two seasons. The 2012-13 team opened league play 6-0 and the 2011-12 squad went 4-0.

-SDSU snapped a three-game road-losing streak Thursday and are 2-5 on the road this season.

-South Dakota State is 37-11 all-time (.770 winning percentage) on the road in Summit League contests. The last time it lost a league road game was at IUPUI Feb. 14, 2013.

-Omaha is 7-2 at home this season, but has lost two of its last three games in Sapp Fieldhouse.

-SDSU enters the contest averaging 69 points per game in league contests while limiting its opponents to 61 points per game. The Mavericks average 78.1 points in their home games, and give up 60.4 points per outing.

A Quick Glance at South Dakota State

-Head coach Aaron Johnston’s probable starters vs. Omaha are senior Hannah Strop (2.9 ppg, 4.9 rpg), junior forward Mariah Clarin (7.9 ppg, 6.7 rpg), junior guards Megan Waytashek (11.9 ppg, 4.3 rpg), Gabrielle Boever (5.8 ppg, 2.7 apg) and senior guard Steph Paluch (9.0 ppg, 2.7 rpg). The lineup sports a 10-6 record.

-Waytashek has scored in double figures in 11 of 19 games, and seven other Jacks have posted double-digit scoring games. Waytashek, junior Megan Stuart and freshman Kerri Young have SDSU’s only 20-plus point games this season. Waytashek registered the Jacks’ third double-double of the season with 23 points and 13 rebounds at Western Illinois Jan.16. Clarin recorded the teams’ first two double-doubles.

-SDSU is shooting 40.1 percent from the field, 32.2 percent from three-point range and 70.5 percent from the free-throw line. The Jacks are also averaging 66.7 points per game and limiting opponents to 66.2 points per game.

-The Jacks have a deep squad with eight players averaging at least 13 minutes per game. Their bench averages 28.6 points per outing this season.


-Omaha is 9-7 overall, 1-1 in Summit League play and 7-2 at home this season. They beat North Dakota State, 66-48, Thursday.

-The Mavericks were picked seventh in The Summit League’s annual preseason poll. Senior guard Ericka House was named to the preseason second team.

-Omaha has two players averaging double figures in scoring. House leads the team in scoring (18.2) while junior guard Felicia Anderson is scoring at a 12.5 clip.

-Junior center Taijhe Kelly grabs a team-high 6.7 rebounds while freshman guard Madi Robson dishes a team-best 4.7 assists per game.

-Omaha is shooting 43.4 percent from the field, 31.9 percent from three-point range and 72.4 percent from the free-throw line.

-The Mavericks return one starter, seven letterwinners and adds five newcomers.

Omaha Series

-Saturday’s game is the 62nd meeting between SDSU and Omaha in women’s basketball. The, Mavericks lead the series, 31-30.

-The series started in 1976-77 with the Mavericks winning the first 13 games.

-The Jackrabbits broke into the win column with a 59-56 victory during the 1981-82 season and dominated the series late in the Division II era when both SDSU and UNO were members of the North Central Conference. SDSU won 20 of the 24 meetings between the 1992-93 and 2003-04 seasons. Since then, the Jacks have beaten Omaha twice, last year.

-Junior Megan Waytashek averaged 10.5 points and shot 58.3 percent from the field in her two games vs. the Mavericks. Senior Hannah Strop averaged 5.8 points and 4.5 rebounds in her two outings against Omaha.
