Jackrabbits Return to Frost Arena

             Sporting the nation’s 13th-longest home win streak, the South Dakota State women’s basketball team (14-7, 5-0) returns to the friendly confines of Frost Arena Thursday to host the Denver Pioneers (5-15, 3-2) at 7 p.m.

            Sitting atop the Summit League standings, the Jackrabbits enter the game with a 12-game home win streak, dating to last season, and a five-game overall win streak after beating North Dakota State, 73-53, Jan. 25. Freshman Kerri Young came off the bench to score a career- and game-high 23 points in the win.

            The Pioneers, currently tied for third in the league with IPFW, enter Thursday’s game on a modest two-game win streak after defeating Western Illinois, 87-83, Jan. 26.

            SDSU is ranked 21st in the latest mid-major poll.

JACKRABBIT STORYLINES

-Thursday’s game marks the first-ever Summit League contest between South Dakota State and Denver after the Pioneers join the league last year.

-SDSU leads The Summit League with a 5-0 record. The Jacks also started 5-0 last year. The 2012-13 team opened league play 6-0 before losing at IUPUI Feb. 14, 2013.

-SDSU is 2-0 in league play at home and is 9-0 in Frost Arena this season.

-South Dakota State is 37-6 all-time (.860 winning percentage) in Frost Arena in Summit League contests. The last time it lost a league home game was vs. IUPUI Jan. 19, 2013.

-Denver is 2-10 on the road this season and is winless in Summit League road contests. The last time the Pioneers won a road game this season was Nov. 16 at Air Force.

-SDSU enters the contest averaging 72 points per game in league contests while limiting its opponents to a league-leading 60.4 points per game. The Pioneers average 79 points in Summit League games, and give up 79.2 points per outing.

A QUICK GLANCE AT SOUTH DAKOTA STATE

-Head coach Aaron Johnston’s probable starters vs. Denver are senior Hannah Strop (3.1 ppg, 4.7 rpg), junior forward Mariah Clarin (8.2 ppg, 6.7 rpg), junior guards Megan Waytashek (11.6 ppg, 4.6 rpg), Gabrielle Boever (5.6 ppg, 2.7 apg) and senior guard Steph Paluch (9.6 ppg, 2.7 rpg). The lineup sports a 12-6 record.

-Waytashek has scored in double figures in 12 of 21 games, and seven other Jacks have posted double-digit scoring games. Waytashek, senior Steph Paluch, junior Megan Stuart and freshman Kerri Young have SDSU’s only 20-plus point games this season. Waytashek registered the Jacks’ third double-double of the season with 23 points and 13 rebounds at Western Illinois Jan.16. Clarin recorded the team’s first two double-doubles.

-SDSU is shooting 40.2 percent from the field, 31.6 percent from three-point range and 71.3 percent from the free-throw line. The Jacks are also averaging 67.6 points per game and limiting opponents to 65.5 points per game.

-The Jacks have a deep squad with eight players averaging at least 13 minutes per game. Their bench averages 29.1 points per outing this season.

DENVER

-Denver is 5-15 overall, 3-2 in Summit League play and 2-10 on the road this season. They beat Omaha, 73-66, Jan. 23 and Western Illinois, Jan. 26, 87-83, to move into a tie for third with the Leathernecks in The Summit League.
