SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The South Dakota State women’s soccer team closed out the UTSA Tournament with a scoreless tie against Sam Houston State. As a team the Jackrabbits tallied 27 shots, 12 of those were on goal.

Megan Kingston took her first shot of the game at the 7:24 minute mark. The Jackrabbits added two more shots within three minutes of Kingston's first shot.

SDSU took full advantage of their 14 corner kicks throughout the game. In the first half alone the Jacks had eight corner kicks, which led to numerous scoring opportunities.

"Today was bittersweet. We played very tough and dealt with extreme heat and extra time," noted head coach Lang Wedemeyer. "When we can consistently find ways to finish, we'll be a dangerous team."

The second half followed the same storyline as the first. SDSU had 11 shot attempts in the first and 11 in the second. The Bearkats only had four shots in the game and they all took place in the second half.

The last time SDSU recorded 27 shots in a game was back in 2010. They posted 41 total shots against Centenary on Halloween of 2010. In their game against Lamar on Friday they collected 17 shots.

Caylee Costello received a yellow card in the 47th minute of the game.

Due to the heat both teams rotated the majority of their players in and out. Sam Houston State brought in 11 players off the bench, while South Dakota State subbed in six players.

One of the major factors today for the Jackrabbits was the play of the defense.  The four starting defenders (Ashley Adams, Katie McNeary, Dani Patterson and McKenzie Wolf) played 95 minutes or more. They kept the Bearkats off the shot column in three of the four periods.

Kylie Hambleton had her hands full in the final 10 minutes of regulation as the Jackrabbits tested her with four shots.

Jessica Toms had a chance to give the Bearkats the lead in the 86th minute, but her shot went high.

During the overtime periods the Jackrabbits recorded five shots including Alexa Trakalo’s shot in the final minute. Trakalo’s shot went wide and the game ended in a tie.

The Jackrabbits leave San Anotino with a win and a tie. They scored three goals and allowed zero. As a team they outshot Lamar and Sam Houston State by a combined total of 44-8.

SDSU will be back in action again next weekend at home. They will host Nevada and Northern Illinois in the Jackrabbit Invitational. South Dakota will also be in attendance, but will not play the Jackrabbits.
