Soccer wins Summit League opener
MACOMB, Ill. – The South Dakota State women’s soccer team won their Summit League opener on Friday night 1-0 over Western Illinois. Katie McNeary scored the game-winning goal for the Jackrabbits in the 71st minute.
“It’s always tough to get results on the road in The Summit League, so we are very happy with how our players rose to the occasion today,” noted head coach Lang Wedemeyer. “It’s a great way to start off Summit League play, but there’s a lot of work still to be done.”
The Jackrabbits were put on their toes early in the game as Nicole Inskeep saved Skyler Jessop’s shot at the 1:49 mark. SDSU made their move a few minutes later as both Alyssa Brazil (4:20) and Megan Kingston’s (4:47) shot attempts were both blocked.
SDSU and WIU went back and forth exchanging shot attempts in the first half, but neither team could find the back of the net. SDSU led WIU in shot attempts in the first frame by a total of 9-8. Diana Potterveld and led the team in the first half with two shots each.
Inskeep made four saves, while WIU’s Laura Atkinson tallied five saves of her own in the first 45 minutes.
The Fighting Leathernecks came out of the halftime intermission on the attack. WIU outshot SDSU 6-0 in the first 25 minutes of the second half. The Jackrabbits’ patience paid off as they waited to strike.
Their first shot of the second half for SDSU broke the scoreless tie. In the 71st minute, Madison Yueill found McNeary 18 yards out. McNeary put the ball into the upper right corner for her first career goal (70:10).
SDSU followed up McNeary’s goal with a pair of shots from Darci Miller and Potterveld. Atkinson and the WIU defense saved both shots.
Sarah Hall had two shots for WIU in the final 15 minutes, but they both went wide right.
Inskeep ended the game with six saves in all, which is tied for her season-high. Inskeep and the Jackrabbit defense have posted six shutouts on the year.
Despite being outshot 16-13, the Jackrabbits still prevailed in the end. SDSU as usual controlled the amount of corner kicks (7-2).
SDSU improves to 6-3-2 (1-0-0) on the year, while WIU falls to 4-6-1 (0-1-0).
The Jackrabbits continue their weekend road trip on Sunday, as they play IUPUI at Noon (CST).
