Jackrabbits clinch Summit League Tournament berth
The South Dakota State women’s soccer team clinched a berth in The Summit League Tournament after they defeated North Dakota State 1-0 on Saturday night at Fishback Soccer Park. Caylee Costello scored the game-winning goal for the Jackrabbits.
“It is always going to be a battle when you play North Dakota State, I don’t think tonight was any different,” noted head coach Lang Wedemeyer on the game against North Dakota State. “I thought we did a very good job in the first half controlling the tempo of the game and limiting their opportunities for the most part, we just couldn’t find a way to finish.”
SDSU controlled the majority of play during the first half as the outshot NDSU, 9-2.
Shelby Raper tallied the first shot for SDSU in the fifth minute of the game (4:09). The North Dakota State defense did their best to keep the SDSU offense in check in the first 45 minutes of play.
The Bison did not record a shot until the 35th minute when Nicole Inskeep saved Lauren Miller’s shot attempt (34:54).
Sierra Bonham stepped up for her third save of the half when Megan Kingston fired her only shot of the game at the 36:34 minute mark.
Inskeep kept the Bison off the scoreboard in the final seconds of the first half as she saved Miller’s shot with eight seconds left.
The Bison and the Jackrabbits went into the break scoreless.
The second half of the game was more balanced as both teams posted six shots each.
’s header in the 52nd minute, which started the Jackrabbit attack in the second half, was saved by Bonham. Miller had two shot attempts after Costello’s header, but one went wide (62:40) and the other one went high (67:49).
After Miller’s two shots, SDSU responded with five shot attempts of their own in a seven-minute span.
The Jackrabbits finally broke the scoreless tie when Darci Miller chipped the ball into the box and Costello found the back of the net for her third goal of the season.
NDSU did not give up after Costello’s goal. They outshot SDSU 4-0 in the final 13 minutes of the game. The Bison’s best chance to tie the game up came with five minutes to play. Anisha Kinnarath’s shot (84:31) hit the post and Inskeep saved Miller’s rebound attempt (84:39).
The SDSU defense held Kinnarath and Miller to six total shots. Entering the game, the duo combined for 78 of 150 NDSU’s total shots.
SDSU outshot NDSU, 15-8.
The Jackrabbit defense posted their tenth shutout of the season.
Inskeep made three saves during the game.
SDSU improves to 10-3-2 (5-0-0) on the season, while NDSU falls to 7-8-0 (3-2-0).
The win also gives SDSU a berth in the 2013 Summit League Soccer Tournament in Fort Wayne, Ind. on Nov 8-10.
The Jackrabbits travel to Denver, Colo. for a showdown with No. 16 Denver on Friday, Oct. 25. Game time is set for 7 p.m. (CST)
