Creighton Downs SDSU 3-2
BROOKINGS, S.D.— Creighton netted a late goal to down the South Dakota State women’s soccer team, 3-2, in its regular-season opener at Fishback Soccer Park.
Creighton moves to 1-0-0 on the season, while South Dakota State falls to 0-1-0.
After a scoreless first half, in which South Dakota State outshot Creighton, 6-5, the teams traded goals in the second. Diana Potterveld opened the scoring just over 10 minutes into the second on the rush. Danielle Rice made the initial save, but Potterveld collected her own rebound and gave SDSU a 1-0 lead.
Creighton responded with the equalizer just over 10 minutes later, as Kirstyn Corder took a pass from Stephanie Anasi and beat Nicole Inskeep. The Bluejays took their first lead at 71:34 on a goal by Alyssa Jara.
But Shelby Raper tied the game back up at 73:41 off a pass from Potterveld. With less than eight minutes remaining, Corder scored her second goal of the game to secure the victory for the Bluejays.
Creighton outshot South Dakota, 14-11, in the second half and 19-17 overall. The Bluejays took five corner kicks in the game, while the Jackrabbits took none.
Inskeep made nine saves in the contest, while Rice made six. Potterveld led South Dakota State in points with three and in shots with five, including two on goal.
The Jackrabbits return to action Sunday when they travel to Grand Forks, N.D. to take on North Dakota at 1 p.m.
