ST. PAUL, MINN. — Behind strong defensive play and a three-save performance by Elisa Stamatakis, the South Dakota State women’s soccer team held high-powered Minnesota to a single goal through 88 minutes of play.

But the Jackrabbits couldn’t solve 2013 Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Year Tarah Hobbs and dropped the match, 2-0, Sunday afternoon at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium.

"We played much better today but were still missing that little bit of quality to change the outcome," head coach Lang Wedemeyer said. "Playing two Big Ten teams in the same weekend was tough, but it gave us a good picture of what we need to do moving forward."

South Dakota State falls to 0-3-0 on the season, while Minnesota improves to 3-1-0.

Sydney Squires scored the game’s first goal in the 19th minute after a period of sustained offensive pressure by the Golden Gophers. Late in the 17th minute, Minnesota began to press the Jackrabbits, forcing Stamatakis to make a diving save on a Squires shot to maintain the scoreless deadlock.

The Gophers got the ball back in the 19th minute and quickly worked it back into the South Dakota State end. After Taylor Stainbrook’s shot was blocked, Josee Stiever came up with the ball and sent it to Squires, who netted her fourth goal of the season to give the Gophers a 1-0 advantage.

Simone Kolander tacked on Minnesota’s second goal just past the 88-minute mark off a pass from Haley Helverson.

Minnesota outshot South Dakota State, 21-7, and held an 11-1 edge in corner kicks. Hobbs made three saves to earn the shutout.

Stamatakis made her 34th career start in net against Minnesota, moving her into sole possession of second place all time in goalkeeper games started. Diana Potterveld led South Dakota State in shots with two.

The Jackrabbits kick off their longest home stand of the season against Drake Friday, Sept. 5 at 6 p.m. They then host Bemidji State Sunday, Sept. 7 and Northern State Thursday, Sept. 11.
