Soccer announces 2012 schedule…
The South Dakota State women’s soccer team announced its schedule for the upcoming season.
The Jacks are set to play a 19-game schedule, which includes two exhibition games, for the 2012 season. The schedule includes two NCAA College Cup qualifiers from last season in Georgia and conference foe Oakland. Georgia won its first round game before being eliminated in the second round, while Oakland lost in the first round.
The non-conference portion of the schedule features three Big Ten schools (Minnesota, Nebraska and Wisconsin), three Missouri Valley schools (Drake, Northern Iowa and Creighton) and one school each from the Horizon League (Green Bay), Mountain West (UNLV), SEC (Georgia) and Big 12 (Iowa State).
The games against UNLV and Georgia are part of the Kansas Invitational Tournament in late August. SDSU faces both opponents for the first time in school history.
After opening Summit League play on the road for two games, the Jacks host four straight games on Oct. 12, 14, 19 and 21. The stretch begins with IUPUI and ends with in-state rival South Dakota. SDSU closes out the regular season at conference newcomer Nebraska-Omaha on Oct. 26.
“We always try and play the most competitive schedule we can, but I believe that this may be our toughest in the Division I era,” head coach Lang Wedemeyer said. “Our non-conference section is full of teams that have been to the NCAA tournament and will be a great challenge right from the first exhibition. The Summit League continues to get stronger and will be even more so this season.”
SDSU also hosts The Summit League Tournament this season by way of its 2011 regular season championship. Tournament play is set for Nov. 2 and 4.
The season opens with the pair of exhibition games against Minnesota and Nebraska on Aug. 8 and 10, respectively, with both to be played in Brookings, S.D.
