Jacks split Saturday twinbill
ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Nick Andrews delivered the go-ahead run with a pinch-hit double in the top of the eighth and closer J.D. Moore came through with two shutout innings to lift the South Dakota State University baseball team to a split of a doubleheader with 5-3 victory over Saint Louis Saturday afternoon in the final game of a three-game series.
In the opener, SLU scored the final nine runs of the game en route to an 11-6 victory. The Billikens moved to 12-9 overall, while SDSU moved to 10-7 overall after winning two of the three games in the weekend set.
With Game 2 tied at 2-all entering the top of the eighth, Andrew Melton started the game-winning rally by drawing a leadoff walk. Melton advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored when Andrews greeted reliever Jon Levin with a double down the left-field line. Aaron Machbitz then followed with a single up the middle to score pinch-runner Zach Holt.
SLU came right in the home half of the eighth inning, loading the bases on three consecutive singles off Jackrabbit reliever Talon Jumper. Moore then entered the game and allowed a run to score on a sacrifice fly before retiring the next two hitters on a strikeout and groundout.
The Jackrabbits added an unearned run for insurance in the top of the ninth as Sam Pack and Al Robbins began the frame with base hits. A sacrifice by Melton moved up both runners before Machbitz reached on an error that allowed Pack to score.
Moore once again worked out of a jam in the bottom of the ninth. Facing runners at second and third with one out, the sophomore right-hander struck out the next two hitters to earn his fourth save of the season and second of the series.
Robbins, Machbitz, Pack and Jacobson all tallied two of the Jackrabbits' 11 hits.
SDSU starter Stephen Bougher struck out seven and walked three in 6 2/3 innings but did not factor in the decision.
In the opener, the Jackrabbits led 6-2 before SLU took the lead with a five-run fifth inning and went on to an 11-6 win.
SDSU scored three times in the top of the first inning as Jake Ratz delivered a two-run double and Machbitz added a run-scoring single.
After the Billikens scored single runs in the first two innings, the Jackrabbits again struck for three runs in the top of the third. Ratz led off with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Machbitz. Andrews made it 5-2 with a double to center field that scored Jacobson, and Tyler Shannon capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly to plate Andrews.
From there it was all SLU as the Billikens scored twice in the home half of the third inning on a two-run single by Mike Levine off Jackrabbit starter Shane Kraemer, and roughed up the bullpen for five runs in the fifth. Alec Sole provided the big blow in the fifth with a bases-clearing, three-run double.
SDSU was held without a hit after the fifth inning as the Billikens held an 11-10 advantage in hits. Andrews doubled twice and Ratz added a pair of extra-base hits to lead the Jackrabbits at the plate.
The Jackrabbits are scheduled to return to action Wednesday afternoon at Creighton.
