BROOKINGS, S.D. – The South Dakota State women’s soccer team dropped their season opener against Iowa State 2-1. Dani Patterson scored the lone goal for the Jackrabbits.

Nicole Inskeep made her first career start in yellow and blue on Friday night. Inskeep turned away six of the eight shots on goal.

Lauren Roeling put the Cyclones up 1-0 when she scored at the 28:15 mark. Koree Willer and Adalie Schmidt assisted Roeling on the play.

The Jackrabbits found themselves down 1-0 going into the second half, but within two minutes of the second half they tied the game up. Alyssa Brazil placed a corner kick into the box and found Diana Potterveld who headed the ball into the ground. Patterson was able to put the loose ball into the back of the net.

The Jackrabbits and Cylcones remained tied until the 86:52 mark. Willer has able to capitalize on a pass from Madi Ott and she gave the Cyclones the lead for good.

SDSU subbed in six players throughout the game, all of them playing in their first career game as a Jackrabbit. Head coach Lang Wedemeyer talked about the youth of the team by saying, “It was an eye-opening experience for a lot of our freshmen." He also noted, "They were even better from what they learned in the first half.”

Iowa State led SDSU in fouls (9-4) and shots (10-4).

Patterson’s goal was the first of her career.

The Jackrabbits are back in action on Sunday at Noon. They will host Loyola of Chicago at Fishback Soccer Park.
