Jackrabbits reign supreme on Senior Day
The South Dakota State women’s soccer team ended their regular season campaign with a 3-0 win over Fort Wayne on Sunday afternoon at Fishback Soccer Park. Three different Jackrabbits scored in the contest.
“We have always had the potential to do well this season, even games we lost this year we were very good in and created plenty of chances to win those games,” noted head coach Lang Wedemeyer on the play of the team. “It was a nice to find a way to win through the majority of the conference season, but now it’s a new game going to the conference tournament. “
With winds up to 35 mph on the afternoon both teams had to make adjustments early in the game. Megan Kingston tallied the first shot on the day for SDSU seven minutes (6:32) into the game. Her shot went high.
The Jackrabbit defense did not allow a Mastodon shot until the 23rd minute of the game (22:15). Delia Soucie’s shot went wide.
Kingston broke the scoreless tie for Jackrabbits on her second shot of the game. Shelby Raper found Kingston in front of the Fort Wayne net and Kingston finished for her second goal of the season (28:49).
Fort Wayne had a few chances to tie the game towards the end of the first half, but weren’t able to capitalize on their shot attempts.
Andie Lazzerini’s shot at the 35:11 mark went wide and twenty seconds later Mayson Whitman’s shot was blocked by the Jackrabbit defense (35:33). Lazzerni followed up Whitman’s shot with another of her own, but it went wide (35:38).
The first half ended with the Jackrabbits holding onto a 1-0 lead.
SDSU came out on the attack in the second half, much like they have done throughout the year. The Jackrabbits posted two goals on eight shots in the second half of the game.
Kingston collected her third point of the game as she assisted McKenzie Wolf for a goal in the 60th minute. Kingston passed the ball to Wolf in the box and she put the ball in the back of the net for her first goal of the season (59:11).
The Fort Wayne offense couldn’t find a rhythm in the second half as they only took one shot. Nicole Inskeep made her lone save of the game in the 63rd minute on Sydney Hoareau’s only shot of the game (62:32).
The Jackrabbits added one last goal in the final minutes of the game. Madison Yueill beat a Mastodon defender and went one-on-one with Sam Pavilka. Yueill went upper left corner to beat the keeper for her second goal of the year (84:26).
