Softball splits at Lion Classic
HAMMOND, La. - The South Dakota State softball team opened the Jimmy John's Lion Classic II in Hammond, La., on Friday with a 3-2 win over LSU-Alexandria, but fell in the nightcap to UTEP by a 13-5 score.
The Jackrabbits end the day with a 2-5 record, while LSUA fell to 4-2 and UTEP improved to 3-4 on the season.
Freshman Jennifer Sutton picked up her first-career win in the opener, giving up two runs, one earned, on eight hits, with two walks and two strikeouts over five innings.
Down 1-0 in the fourth, the Jacks tied the game on a Marlee Petersen RBI double to center that scored Sammy Bingham. An inning later, down 2-1 after LSUA regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth, Elyse Eitel singled home Devon Reick to tie the game at 2-2.
Helping her own cause, Sutton opened the sixth with a single, and then gave way to fellow freshman Lauren Chirnside to run the bases. A wild pitch and an LSUA error got Chirnside to third base, before she eventually scored on a failed pickoff attempt to give the Jacks a 3-2 lead in the top of the sixth.
Sophomore Mindy Lorimor took it from there, pitching two hitless inning of relief to earn the first save of her career, posting three strikeouts to just one walk.
The Jackrabbits pounded out 11 hits against UTEP in the second game of the day, including a 3-for-4, 2 RBI effort from Eitel, but the Miners finished with 16 hits, including three homeruns, to secure the 13-5 win.
UTEP scored three runs in the second to take the early lead, and even after the Jacks got one back on a Devan Larsen RBI single in the second, UTEP came back with three runs in the third and three more in the fourth to go up 9-1.
The Jacks got one in the fifth on an Alex Landon double and two more in the sixth on an Eitel single, but the Miners put any comeback hopes to rest with a four run seventh inning.
The Jackrabbits look to get back on the winning track on Saturday with two games on the slate, starting with UMBC (University of Maryland-Baltimore County) at 12:30 p.m., followed by a game against the host Southeastern Louisiana Lions at 3 p.m.
