Jacks sweep Oakland in Omaha
OMAHA, Neb. – The South Dakota State softball team used the long ball to beat Oakland 4-1 the first game of a Summit League doubleheader in Omaha, Neb., on Friday, and then capitalized on a Golden Grizzlies miscue on the second game to earn a 2-0 win to complete the sweep.
The Jackrabbits improve to 13-21 on the season overall with the wins, and to 3-8 in The Summit League, while the Golden Grizzlies fall to 5-13 overall and to 1-6 in the league.
Playing at Westgate Field in Omaha due to the recent winter storm in Brookings, the Jacks fell into an early 1-0 hole in Game 1 after an Oakland homerun in the top of the second, but got that run back in the bottom half of the frame with an unearned run to tie the game at 1-1 after two innings.
SDSU took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth on Marlee Petersen’s team-leading sixth homerun of the season, and then pushed the lead to 3-1 in the fifth, when Emily Weber smacked her first homer of the season on the left field fence.
Kori Seidlitz handled the rest in earning her sixth win of the season in the circle. She gave up one run in the complete game win, giving up eight hits with seven strikeouts and four walks.
After a total of three homeruns in the opener, the nightcap saw only two runs; both unearned after five and a half scoreless innings, and both off the bat of Petersen, who knocked in both runs with a single to centerfield that put SDSU on top 2-0.
Oakland came back to load the bases in the bottom of the sixth, but Jackrabbit starter Jennifer Sutton kept her cool and worked out of the jam to earn the win, which boosts her record to 5-7 on the season. Sutton surrendered six hits, with four strikeouts and one walk.
Sutton also got some help from Devon Reick in centerfield, including a diving catch that ended the fourth inning with a runner on third base, and an outfield assist after throwing out a runner at home for the second out in the top of the sixth inning.
The Jackrabbits look to complete the series sweep on Saturday, when they host the Golden Grizzlies at Westgate Field in Omaha at noon.
