OMAHA, Neb. – The South Dakota State softball team completed a three-game Summit League sweep on Saturday with a 7-4 win over Oakland at Wesgate Field in Omaha, Neb., in a series moved due to unplayable field conditions in Brookings.

The sweep boosts the Jackrabbits record to 14-21 overall and to 4-8 in The Summit League, while the Golden Grizzlies fall to 5-14 overall and to 1-7 in the league.

Oakland cracked the scoreboard first, pushing across a run in the first inning to take the early 1-0 lead, a lead they would hold until the fourth inning, when the Jacks plated three runs.

Alex Landon doubled home Kelly Kleppin and Devon Reick in the fourth to put SDSU up 2-1, before Elyse Eitel reached on the first of four OU errors on the day, which brought home Jessica Markanich to put the Jacks up 3-1.

The scored remained 3-1 until the bottom of the sixth, when SDSU put the game away with four runs, capitalizing on another Golden Grizzlies miscue.

Kleppin opened the inning with a double, Sammy Bingham followed with a double and stole second, opening first base for Landon, who drew a walk to load the bases with no outs. That brought up Eitel, who delivered with a single up the middle to score Klepping and Bingham to give SDSU a 5-1 lead.

Allison Huffman came up next and singled to reload the bases, bringing up Marlee Peterson, who after an OU pitching change, hit a deep sacrifice fly to left field that scored Landon to give SDSU a 6-1 lead.

The defensive hero of the first two games of the series, Devon Reick knocked in the final run of the inning with an RBI single through the left side of the infield to give the Jacks a commanding 7-1 lead heading into the top of the seventh.

Oakland’s Erin Galloway quickly turned the Jacks 7-1 lead into a 7-4 lead in the top of the seventh with a three-run bomb over the left field fence, but Jackrabbit starter Kori Seidlitz pitched out of the jam and got the Golden Grizzlies to hit into a double play to end the game with the game’s tying run on deck.

Seidlitz gave up four runs, three earned, on nine hits, with seven strikeouts and a pair of walks in the win, which improves her record to 7-12 on the season.

The Jacks got seven hits in the game from six different players, led by Reick, who went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Landon went 1-for-2 with a run scored and a pair of RBI, while Eitel went 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI in the win.

The Jackrabblits look to build on the winning streak on Friday, when start a three-game series with Western Illinois at 2 p.m.
