South Dakota State Director of Athletics Justin Sell announced on Wednesday that Alex Hupp would serve at the interim head coach of the Jackrabbit softball team for the upcoming 2014 season. Hupp takes over for Kim Aggabao, who resigned in September to take a head coaching position at Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson, Calif.

“After a national search, we felt that it was in the best interest of our student-athletes to maintain continuity and continue the search after the 2014 season,” Sell said. ”Alex led the team through a great fall season, and we look forward to seeing that continue in the spring.”

“I want to thank Justin Sell and our administration for giving me this great opportunity. I’m very excited and humbled to take on this position for the remainder of the year,” Hupp said. “Over the past two seasons, coach Aggabao established an atmosphere where the team is eager to continue moving forward in the right direction. I’m honored to continue leading this team in a direction where the administration, university and city of Brookings will be proud of.”

Hupp joined the Jackrabbit softball staff as an assistant coach in July 2012, after two seasons as an assistant at Emporia State University in Emporia, Kan., and after a standout career at the University of Nebraska.

In two seasons with the Hornets, Hupp helped guide the team to a combined 84-27 overall record, which includes a 28-4 mark in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play. ESU advanced to the NCAA Regional in both seasons and posted a perfect 20-0 MIAA record in 2012, when the Hornets advanced to the NCAA South Central Regional final in Edmond, Okla.

While playing for the Cornhuskers, Hupp threw a no-hitter and posted a career 3.09 ERA in 197.1 innings. She also saw time at the plate, on the base paths and in  the outfield, as well as in the circle for the Huskers.

Off the field, Hupp earned first-team Academic All-Big 12 honors twice, and Commissioners Honor Roll accolades in all four years at Nebraska.

Hupp earned first-team High School All-American honors from the NFCA and EA Sports in 2006 following her standout career at Olathe East High School. She earned Gatorade Softball Player of the Year honors for the state of Kansas in 2005-06 after leading her high school team to three straight state championships in Kansas Class 6A.
