Softball drops league-opening doubleheader
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The South Dakota State softball team opened Summit League play on Friday with a doubleheader against Fort Wayne, but came up short in both games, falling 8-0 in the opener and 5-1 in the night cap.
The teams played the games in Indianapolis, Ind., due to poor field conditions in Fort Wayne. The losses drop the Jackrabbits to 5-16 overall and to 0-2 in league play, while the Mastodons improve to 21-7 and to 2-0 in the league.
The Mastodons kept it rolling in Game 2, plating a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning to take the early lead.
The Jacks halved that lead in the top of the fifth on Allison Huffman’s first homerun of the season, but the ‘Dons answered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth to secure the 5-1 win.
Four different Jackrabbits got hits in the game, and Jennifer Sutton took the loss in the circle.
The Jacks look to avoid the sweep on Saturday in the final game of the series, which starts at 1 p.m. ET, noon Central.
