FARGO, N.D.  – The sixth seeded South Dakota State softball team opened play at The Summit League Championships on Wednesday with a 7-2 loss to No. 3 seed South Dakota at Ellig Sports Complex in Fargo, N.D.

The Jackrabbits fall to 11-35 with the loss and face elimination on Thursday against either No. 4 seed IUPUI or No. 5 seed Western Illinois at 3 p.m., weather permitting.

South Dakota cracked the scoreboard first, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first, and then added one run in the second, two more in the fourth and single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take a commanding 6-0 lead into the seventh inning.

The Jacks broke through for two runs in the seventh on back-to-back two-out doubles from KayCee Miller and Emily Weber, and an RBI single from Vanessa Kellems, but the rally came up short.

Jennifer Sutton started for the Jacks in the circle and gave up three runs on four hits, with a walk and two strikeouts over two complete innings.

The Summit League’s freshman of the year, Rachel Cue earned the complete game win for the Coyotes, who improve to 29-20 and advance to play No. 2 seed Fort Wayne on Thursday
