The South Dakota State softball team came from behind to defeat Summit League leader North Dakota State 8-5 in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, but the Bison came back to earn the split with a 6-2 win in the nightcap.

The Jacks end the day with a 13-26-1 overall record and 5-15 in The Summit League, while the defending league champion Bison end the day with a 31-18 record overall and a 15-5 mark in league play.

Both Jackrabbit starter Pam Nicholson and Bison starter Krista Menke took no-hit bids into the fifth inning of the opener, but neither one made it through the inning unscathed.

The Bison used a run and an error to score a pair of runs in the top of the fifth to take a 2-0 lead, but it didn't last long, as the Jacks used two hits and two NDSU errors to score four runs in the bottom of the inning.

North Dakota State regained the lead in the top of the sixth, scoring three runs on three hits and one SDSU error go back on top 5-4, only to see the Jackrabbits come right back with four runs on four hits in the bottom of the sixth to go up 8-5.

A Sammy Bingham double off the wall in left field gave the Jacks the lead at 6-5. Krista Honken followed with an RBI single to right field to score Marlee Petersen and Bingham scored the final run of the frame, scoring from third on a passed ball. Bingham, however, suffered an injury on the play, and did not return.

Mindy Lorimor picked up the Game 1 win to improve to 2-1 on the season. She gave up three hits over one and a third innings of relief with no runs or walks and one strikeout.

Nicholson did not factor in the decision after five and a third innings pitched. She gave up five runs, three earned, on three hits with five walks and two strikeouts.

Menke also pitched five and a third innings before giving way to Whitney Johnson for the final two thirds of an inning. Menke fell to 20-10 with the loss.

The Bison struck first in Game 2, manufacturing a run in the second inning to go up 1-0, and then added three runs in the third to take a commanding 4-0 advantage.

SDSU bounced back with two runs in the third, utilizing a hit and an NDSU error to score two runs.

The Jacks would not score after that, and the Bison added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh on a two run homerun by Cristina Borek for the final 6-2 margin.

Kori Seidlitz went the distance for the Jacks in the loss; Menke got the win for the Bison, giving up two unearned runs on two hits over seven innings, with eight strikeouts and two walks.

The Jacks and Bison play the rubber game of the three game series on Sunday at noon.
