SDSU Athletics welcomes three new staff members
The South Dakota State Athletic Department recently added a pair of positions to the athletic department staff and filled a third position. The staff additions include Michele Schmidt as the assistant sports information director and Adam Parsons as an assistant strength and conditioning coach. Ryan Johnson also joined the staff as the assistant athletic director for marketing and promotions.
Schmidt brought more than 10 years of experience when she joined the sports information staff on Nov. 4, where she serves as the primary contact for Jackrabbit volleyball, women’s basketball and both men’s and women’s golf.
Before joining the Jacks, Schmidt served as the assistant athletics director for media relations at Niagara University from 2003-07 and as an assistant sports information director at Kansas State University from 1999-2003, at Cincinnati from 1996-99 and at Canisius College from 1995-96.
A native of Buffalo, N.Y., Schmidt graduated from SUNY Brockport with a bachelor’s degree in communications and earned a master’s degree in physical education from Canisius College.
A Comox, British Columbia native, Parsons joined the staff on Nov. 18 after severing as an assistant strength and conditioning coach at the University of North Dakota since June of 2013. He also brings a variety of experience in the field from Belmont University, Notre Dame, Tennessee State, Oregon State and Washington State.
Parsons earned a bachelor’s degree in human kinetics from the University of British Columbia and a master’s degree in sport administration from Belmont University. He also earned certifications from the American Red Cross in first aid, CPR/AED, as a USA Weightlifting Certified Sports Performance Coach and a National Strength & Conditioning Association CSCS certification.
Ryan Johnson joined the Jackrabbit athletic staff on Nov. 12 as the new assistant athletic director for marketing and promotions, after working as the director of marketing and promotions at Utah Valley University since May of 2012.
Prior to working at UVU, Johnson worked as the national events coordinator for USA Wrestling in his hometown of Colorado Springs, Colo., from 2009-12 and as the Finley-Ledall Marketing Department Scholar at Monfort College of Business in Greeley, Colo., from 2008-09.
Johnson earned a Bachelor of Science degree in marketing and applied statistics from the University of Northern Colorado and a masters in business administration degree in marketing and project management from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.
