Jackrabbits gear up for Food Fight
South Dakota State University student-athletes will attempt to successfully defend its Summit League Food Fight title by conducting a series of collections over the next two weeks.
The collection period kicks off Saturday, with donations of non-perishable food items accepted at home swimming and equestrian events. Collection events also are planned for all other home athletic events through Feb. 15. Donations also can be dropped off at the Jackrabbit Ticket Office inside the Stanley J. Marshall HPER Center during weekday business hours (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.).
Besides food donations, cash and Hobo Dough donations also will be accepted. A $5 donation equals 13 pounds of food. All food and cash donations will be directed to the Brookings Food Pantry.
Local businesses also will assist in the Food Fight efforts, which are coordinated by the SDSU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Buffalo Wild Wings will donate a percentage of its profits from 6 to 10 p.m. on Feb. 4, and several other businesses, including Taco John’s, Papa John’s and Qdoba will have collection jars in their stores over the two-week period.
In conjunction with the Feb. 10 Jackrabbit Basketball Coaches Show, Cubby’s Sports Bar and Grill in downtown Brookings will donate $1 for every food item ordered. Student-athletes will be available for autographs from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
In addition, local schools are teaming up with Jackrabbit Athletics by holding food collection competitions.
The final collection date is set for Feb. 15. Children attending that morning’s Fast Break Basketball Clinic are asked to bring a non-perishable food item, and Jackrabbit fans can make a final contribution at that afternoon’s women’s basketball game versus Western Illinois.
South Dakota State won the 2013 Summit League Food Fight title with a total of 22,545 pounds collected.
