Frost at 40: 2000 Volleyball Part II

Editor's Note: Throughout the 2012-13 athletics season, Jackrabbit Athletics will spotlight 40 of the top moments in the 40-year history of Frost Arena. This week's segment focuses on the 2000 volleyball match between South Dakota State and the University of Nebraska-Omaha.

VOLLEYBALL: SOUTH DAKOTA STATE 3, NEBRASKA-OMAHA 1
The ninth-ranked South Dakota State University volleyball team moved into a tie for the North Central Conference lead, downing sixth-ranked Nebraska-Omaha in four games on Nov. 4, 2000, at Frost Arena.

With the 15-3, 15-10, 13-15, 15-7 victory, SDSU capped a 13-0 home regular season and improved to 26-3 overall, 13-3 in the NCC. Nebraska-Omaha dropped into a three-way tie with SDSU and the Northern Colorado-Augustana winner on Saturday at 13-3 in league play, 25-3 overall.

Rose Ebnet led the Jackrabbits with 25 kills and Shauna Sturm added 19 kills and a team-high 13 digs. Wendy O'Neill also reached double figures in kills for the Jackrabbits with 11.

Liz Archer and Angie Rime tallied 11 digs apiece and Grethe Bornhoft added 10. Rime also ran the SDSU offense with 52 set assists.

The Jackrabbits out-hit UNO .354 to .145 and held a 10-3 blocking advantage, led by four blocks each from Kelly Hoemann and Gretchen Gruber.

Nebraska-Omaha was led by Nikki Mastny's 25 kills. Tracy Ankeny added 15 kills and nine service aces (six in Game 3), while Krista Niezwaag contributed 12 kills.

Ankeny and setter Bethany Tygert each had 14 digs for the Mavericks. Tygert tallied 55 set assists.

The Jackrabbit win also was the 172nd in SDSU head coach Mary Byrne's tenure at SDSU, tying her with Ruth Marske (1973-80) for the all-time SDSU lead in volleyball coaching victories.
