Jacks ready for Summit meet
The South Dakota State University swimming and diving teams are ready to compete at the Summit League Championships this week in Rochester, Mich.
Competition begins Wednesday evening on the Oakland University campus and concludes Saturday.
The Jackrabbit women are led by a pair of record-setting seniors.
Morgan McLain broke school records in the 100-yard backstroke (58.00 sec.), 200 backstroke (2:03.55), 200 individual medley (2:05.22) and 400 individual medley (4:33.10) at the Falcon Invitational in December. McLain's school-record time in the 200 individual medley is the top time in the conference this year and her record time in the 200-yard backstroke is second best in the conference. She has 30 wins on the season.
Ashley Valdez broke the school record in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 57.63 seconds earlier this season in a home meet against Western Illinois and North Dakota. That time ranks third this year in the conference.
Sophomore Andrea Budahl ranks third in the 1,000-yard freestyle and 1,650-yard freestyle with times of 10:25.48 and 17:19.95.
The team ranks second in the 200-yard medley relay, 400-yard medley relay and the 800-yard freestyle relay.
Sophomore Clark Kocourek broke the school record in the 1-meter with a score of 303.45 and the 3-meter dive with a score of 291.60 at home against the University of South Dakota. Kocourek's school records rank fourth this year in the conference.
SDSU also has received Zones-qualifying diving performances from Connor Florand this season.
Freshman Wil Hogue broke the school record in the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 21.19 seconds at the Falcon Invitational in December and matched that mark earlier this month at the Minnesota Challenge. Hogue ranks fourth in the conference in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 46.19 seconds.
Sophomore Chris Schreier ranks third in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:51.06. Schreier ranks fourth in the 400-yard individual medley (4:07.40), 1,000-yard freestyle (9:44.10) and the 1,650-yard freestyle (16:09.23). Schreier is the defending Summit League champion in the 200 butterfly.
Junior Shea Patrick ranks fourth in the conference in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:08.99.
SDSU finished second in the women's division and third in the men's team competition at the 2011 Summit League Championships.
