Jacks end day one in Iowa

IOWA CITY, IOWA - The South Dakota State men's and women's swimming and diving squad completed day one of the three day Hawkeye Invitational hosted by the University of Iowa.

Alexandra Hoffman nearly broke her own school record in the 50 freestyle as she finished in 24.11 seconds. Hoffman's time of 24.07 sec. set the school record at the 2008 Summit League Championships.

Hoffman, along with Shauna Foor, Ashley Valdez and Kaylin Caron, swam that 200 freestyle relay in 1:39.06

In the 500 freestyle, Andrea Budahl clocked in at 5:05.74 to improve by nearly one second from her time in the prelims.

The men competed in a pair of relays starting with the team of John Bisson, Quinn Holden, Phil Albu and Jason Garder, who completed the 200 freestyle relay in 1:26.70.

Later on in the 400 medley relay, Albu, Shea Patrick, Chris Schreier and Jeremy Yacevich finished with a time of 3:29.28.

Both relay times were within one second of the school records.

After the first day of competition, the SDSU women are in sixth-place overall with a score of 40, while the men sit in fifth with 60 points.

Day two of the Hawkeye Invitational starts Saturday at 10 a.m. with the prelims, followed by the finals at 6 p.m.
