SDSU ready for Championships
The South Dakota State swimming and diving team will look to finish the year off strong at the 2011 Summit League Championships in Indianapolis which begins on Wednesday and runs through Saturday
Both the men and the women had their best ever conference finishes last season while this season, the women look to hold on to second and the men hope to improve on their fourth place finish.
The men are led by four-time Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week Chris Schreier, who ranks in the league's top ten in five events, including second in the 200 Fly (1:51.47) and 400 IM (4:04.99) and third in the 100 Fly (50.66). The Indiana native had won 20 events during his freshman season including setting new school records in the 100 Fly (50.66 sec.) at the Hawkeye Invitational and the 200 Fly (1:51.47) two weeks ago at the Minnesota Challenge. Schreier, along with Phil Albu, John Bisson and Jason Garder, also was a member of the record breaking 200 medley relay (1:35.58) at the Hawkeye Invitational.
On the women's side, senior Alexandra Hoffman leads the way ranked among the league's top 10 in four events, while junior Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week Jessica Ferley ranks in six events.
Hoffman recently won her 50th career event in a dual at the University of South Dakota last month and leads the women with 18 wins on the season.
Oakland, the 11-time
defending Summit League Champions and preseason men's and women's
favorite will attempt to defend their crown for yet another season.
The 800 Yard Freestyle Relay will kick off the championships on Wednesday at 7 p.m. Swimming preliminaries begin each day at 11 a.m. (ET) followed directly by diving preliminaries, while swimming finals start at 6:30 p.m. (ET) on Thursday and Friday and 6 p.m. (ET) on Saturday.
