The South Dakota State men's and women's tennis teams stumbled at St. Louis, 5-2 and 6-1, respectively.

On a late night in Missouri, the Jacks battled the Billikens on both the men's and women's sides.

On the men's side, St. Louis won two of three doubles matches to secure the team point. Mateus Moreia and Lucas Pereira teamed up at No. 3 for the lone Jackrabbit win, an 8-4 decision versus Drew Feder and Vuk Poledica.

SDSU made a run in singles, but it was not enough. Andrea Boglić lined up at No. 2 and topped Joe Flanagan 7-5, 6-2. Mateus Moreira pulled the Jacks one point closer with a 6-2, 7-5 victory versus Nishaad Balachandran at No. 5.

Three of the of the remaining four matches were determined by a full third set, all won by the Billikens. Henrique Pereira fell 7-5 in the third set at No. 1, as did Lucas Pereira at No. 6. Parker Lawley also suffered a one-break loss, 6-4 at No. 3.

"On the men's side, it was a meet that could have gone either way," head coach Michael Engdahl said. "It could have easily been 6-1 in our favor. As long as we do not keep making the same mistakes, it will be a learning experience. Our youth showed again in the third sets and we need to maintain our relentless attitude to mature quickly from these matches early in the season."

On the women's side, no third sets were needed despite some close matches. The Billikens won the team doubles point with two wins in three matches. Jenny Blackburne and Ffion Davies scored the most notable win of the day at No. 1, an 8-2 victory versus Mia Elmore and Brooke Urzendowski. Brooke Henry and Florencia Magni battled hard, but dropped an 8-6 decision at No. 2 to Stephanie Hollis and Madison Cook.

In singles, Ffion Davies completed her stellar day with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles versus Cook. Tacy Haws-Lay dropped a narrow 6-3, 6-3 decision at No. 5. Magni pushed her opponent, but lost the second set 6-4.

"It was the first match for the woman and I was happy with the effort and the way we were able to construct points," Engdahl said. "With five freshman on the team, the first match of the season can be tough, but we picked up on some things to improve on for tomorrow's match. St. Louis is a very solid program and we played with them point-for-point."

Complete results are listed below.

Both the SDSU men's and women's tennis teams are back in action Sunday at SIUE. Both meets are scheduled for 4:30 p.m. in Edwardsville, Ill.
