Rabbits open Invite with tie
The South Dakota State women’s soccer team began the Jackrabbit Invitational with a scoreless draw against Nevada on Friday night. The Jackrabbits recorded 26 shot attempts throughout the game.
Nicole Inskeep kept the Wolf Pack off the board with her five saves.
Diana Potterveld recorded the first shot of the game just three minutes in. The Jackrabbits kept Wolf Pack keeper Kelsey Quintos busy with 11 shots on goal.
SDSU opened up the first half of the game with eight shot attempts. During the second half they recorded 12 shot attempts.
At the 19:52 mark of the game, Megan Kingston’s shot was blocked, but it led to two more shot attempts within a two-minute period. SDSU closed out the first half with two shots in the final five minutes.
The second half began with Lindsey Salcido’s shot, but Inskeep stepped up and recorded her lone save of the half.
The Jackrabbits had three shot attempts in the final 10 minutes of regulation. Potterveld’s shot in the 86th minute was blocked and Quintos saved her header in the 88th.
SDSU had four chances in the first overtime to win the game, but were unable to find the back of the net. Inskeep saved Nevada’s only shot attempt in the first overtime period.
The Jackrabbits recorded three corner kicks in the final overtime period, but the Wolf Pack defense kept the SDSU offense in check.
Five Jackrabbits played the entire game.
Brianna Bosson and Potterveld both received yellow cards in Friday night’s match. Bosson received her card in the 70th and Potterveld was carded in the 96th minute.
Potterveld and Stacy Guijarro led the team in shots with four each. Eleven different Jackrabbits recorded at least one-shot attempt, including nine different players with at least one-shot attempt on goal.
"If we get that first goal everything will flow much better," noted head coach Lang Wedemeyer. "We just play with more confidence and freedom."
SDSU now has a record of 0-1-2 in overtime games this year.
Only five games into the early season and the Jacks are outshooting their opponents 94-38. SDSU has recorded 35 corners compared to 14 by their opposition.
The Jackrabbits will close out the Jackrabbit Invitational on Sunday at 1 p.m. against Northern Illinois.
