Final regular season meet up next for Jackrabbits

The South Dakota State track & field teams are heading to Fargo, N.D., for their final competition before the 2014 Summit League Outdoor Track & Field Championships (May 15-17).

NDSU Tune-Up
The NDSU Tune-Up is held at the Ellig Sports Complex in Fargo, N.D. The Jackrabbits are slated to compete against North Dakota and North Dakota State.

The field events start at 1 p.m. (women’s hammer throw), and the running events begin at 4:45 p.m. (women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase).

Last Time Out
Last weekend the Jackrabbits competed at the 89th running of the Howard Wood Dakota Relays.

Marc Husman went on to post an overall time of 49.62 seconds to win his first career outdoor 400-meter dash title. Also in the 400-meter dash, Adam Halverson clocked in at 50.04 to take fourth.

Two Jackrabbit jumpers placed in the top-five of the triple jump event. Jeremiah Ary and Jake Sanderson finished back-to-back with their second- and third-place finishes, respectively. Ary tallied a season-best mark of 46 feet, 3 1/2 inches and Sanderson cleared a distance of 44-7 1/2.

Cullen Mack took second in the discus throw with his personal-best distance of 172-2.

The 4x100-meter relay team of Jacleen Patterson, Jazzelena Black, Gina Fritz and Carly Carper improved on their time of 47.17 set earlier this season at the Bryan Clay Invite. Friday, the quartet posted a time of 46.87 to win the 4x100-meter relay by almost two seconds over the rest of the field. Their time still ranks sixth at SDSU.

Samantha Anderson won the first race of her Jackrabbit career Friday. Anderson posted an overall time of 11:15.77 to take the 3,000-meter steeplechase title. Also in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Alex Suhr took third with her time of 11:28.44.

Amy Paulzine won the javelin throw with her mark of 142-0.

Marissia Hagedorn won the 100-meter hurdles with her personal-best time of 14.32 seconds on the final day of the Howard Wood Dakota Relays. Her time now ranks fifth all-time in the SDSU record book.

Movin’ On Up
SDSU has set 37 top-10 school record book performances during the 2014 outdoor track and field season.

School Records Fall
Jazzelena Black and Mary Wirth opened up their 2014 outdoor season with record-breaking performances. Black set the school record in the triple jump with her mark of 40-3 1/2 and Wirth re-set her school record in the high jump (5-10 3/4). Her old school record was set at the 2011 Howard Wood Dakota Relays (5-9 3/4). Wirth also holds the indoor high jump school record mark (5-10).

Wirth’s high jump mark of 5-10 3/4 is tied for 21st in the nation.

Summit League Honors
Wirth was named The Summit League’s Outdoor Track and Field Female Athlete of the Week (April 1) for her record-setting performance at the Arizona State University Invitational.

Feelin’ 22
Twenty-two Jackrabbits garnered All-Summit League honors at the 2013-14 Summit League Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Smart Rabbit
Andrew Thies was named to the Men’s Indoor Track and Field Academic All-League Team. Thies, a junior, currently holds a grade-point average (GPA) of 3.926 as a Pharmacy major. He was also named Academic All-League during the 2013 outdoor season.

Preseason Polls
The Jackrabbit men were picked to finish third in The Summit League Preseason Poll and the women were selected fourth.

Up Next
The 2014 Summit League Outdoor Track & Field Championships are held in Fargo, N.D., at the Ellig Sports Complex. The conference meet takes place May 15-17.
