Burns breaks SDSU record
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Sean Burns busted his own South Dakota State hammer throw record by nearly three inches Friday as the men's and women's track and field teams competed at the University of Sioux Falls Invitational in Sioux Falls, S.D.
His toss of 191 feet seven inches took the first place spot at the meet. Burns reached his former record of 188-09 at The Summit League Outdoor Track and Field Championships last season in Toledo, Ohio. Burns also won the shot put at USF with a throw of 53-11.75, the fifth-ranked mark at SDSU.
Three other Jacks found their way into the top-five of the hammer throw in Jake Brinkmann, Sam McInerney and Ryan Ackman. Brinkmann took third with a throw of 164-04, McInerney placed fourth with a toss of 161-07 and Ackman finished fifth with a throw of 160-05. Ackman's mark ranks fourth at SDSU.
Ackman also won the discus throw with a toss of 141-07 and McInerney finished second in the javelin with a throw of 156-00.
On the women's side, Jennifer Mack led with wins in the hammer throw and the discus. Her first-place hammer throw of 177-07 is three inches shy of her personal-best mark of 177-10. Mack took the first-place spot in the discus with a throw of 130-04.
Amy Paulzine and Becca Fischer rounded out the top-four spots in the discus. Paulzine finished in third with a throw of 125-07, while Fischer finished fourth with a throw of 124-10. Paulzine also finished third in the javelin with a throw of 110-05, while Ketty Cornemann finished fifth with a mark of 106-02.
The Jacks head to the Howard Wood Relays May 6-7 in Sioux Falls, S.D.
