The South Dakota State men's and women's track and field teams qualified five athletes for the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championship preliminary round...

The NCAA preliminary round (west site) is set to begin on Thursday, May 24 in Austin, Texas.

On the men's side, Jared Vlastuin and Jake Brinkmann qualified, while Mary Wirth, Brooke Garner and Amy Paulzine qualified for the women.

In total, the five athletes qualified in eight events. All athletes compete in field events.

Vlastuin is set to compete in the high jump and long jump. Vlastuin repeated as league champion in the long jump at the Outdoor Championships. He won with a qualifying mark of 25 feet, four inches, and broke the school record by two inches and the stadium record by nearly one foot. The distance was best by nearly 10 inches. Vlastuin also tied a season-best to qualify in the high jump with a mark of six feet, 11 inches, to finish in third at the league meet. Vlastuin is the No. 13 seed in the long jump and the No. 45 seed in the high jump.

Brinkmann is set to compete in the hammer throw. His posted qualifying mark occurred one week prior to the league championships at the USF Relays. The mark of 195 feet, one inch broke the school record and a season-best by over one-half foot. Brinkmann is the No. 34 seed in the hammer. Brinkmann is set to compete in the discus, as well. The field received a late scratch on Monday night which opened up the spot that Brinkmann filled. He won the discus at the Outdoor Championships with a mark of 171 feet, eight inches, a season-best by nearly three feet.

Wirth repeated as champion in the high jump at the Outdoor Championships to qualify. She set the meet record and tied the stadium record with a mark of five feet, eight and one-half inches. The mark also tied a season-best set one week earlier at the USF Relays. Wirth is the No. 46 seed in the high jump.

Garner, two-time The Summit League's Outdoor Track and Field Women's Athlete of the Week, qualified with two school-record marks posted prior to the league meet. Garner set the record in the hammer at the Wayne State Classic in March. The 197 feet, nine inch mark was a school record by nearly 10 feet. The top mark of 173 feet, three inches in the discus added to the SDSU records at the USF Relays. Garner is the No. 16 seed in the hammer and the No. 21 seed in the discus.

Paulzine earned an invitation in the javelin after a school-record mark of 149 feet, nine inches on the same weekend as the other records prior to the league meet, but at the NDSU Dual. Paulzine is the No. 34 seed in the javelin.

Calvin Cammack and Jake Schneller narrowly missed the NCAA field in the pole vault and 800-meter dash, 1500-meter run respectively.

Cammack set the school record in the pole vault with a mark of 16 feet, nine and one-fourth inches in mid-April, one and one-half inches off the qualifying mark.

Schneller won the league championship in the 800 with a time of 1:50.95. His season-best time of 1:50.11 was under two seconds off the school record owned by head coach Rod DeHaven and 0.04 seconds back of the qualifying time. Schneller also posted the best Jackrabbit time in the 1500 at 3:47.33, 0.43 behind the qualifying time, despite minimal competition in the event this season.

For each individual event contested at each of the Championship Preliminary Round sites, the top-48 declared student-athletes are accepted into the competition.

Advancing to the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships is achieved through performance in the Preliminary Round competition at each site. Twelve competitors from each individual event and a minimum of eight teams from each relay event move on from each Preliminary Round site to the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
