Jacks wrap up NCAA Prelim...
The South Dakota State men's and women's track and field athletes wrapped up competition at the NCAA West Preliminary Round...
All three Jackrabbits competed in their second event of the Prelim.
Jake Brinkmann opened the day in the discus. He was a late addition to the field, which received a late scratch on Monday night and opened up the spot that Brinkmann filled. He finished 43rd with a toss of 160 feet, zero inches.
Brooke Garner competed in the hammer throw next. Garner placed 30th with a mark of 188 feet, one inch. She broke the school record earlier this season, the first of two records for Garner.
Having already qualified in the long jump, Jared Vlastuin closed out competition for the Jacks in the high jump. Vlastuin posted a mark of six feet, nine and three-fourth inches to finish tied for 26th place.
Despite no qualifiers on the final day, SDSU jumper Vlastuin advanced to the NCAA Championships in the long jump. Vlastuin qualified with a mark of 25 feet, three and one-half inches to finish 10th, three spots ahead of his competition seed. He made the mark with his second jump in the preliminary stage. The distance was one-half inch short of his season-best at the 2012 Summit League Outdoor Track & Field Championships, which was also a school record.
Advancing to the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships is achieved through performance in the Preliminary Round competition at each site. Twelve competitors from each individual event and a minimum of eight teams from each relay event move on from each Preliminary Round site to the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
The championships are set to take place June 6-8 in Des Moines, Iowa.
