The South Dakota State men’s and women’s cross country teams will begin their 2013 season on Friday night at the Bison Open in Fargo, N.D. The Rose Creek Golf Course is the host for this year’s Bison Open.

Currently the women’s 5k is slated for 6 p.m., while the men’s 8k will follow at 6:35 p.m. Due to weather conditions in Fargo, N.D. the times and distances are subject to change.

Drew Kraft ran a time of 26:41.63 to finish second. On the women’s side, Courtney Neubert finished 11th overall with her time of 19:24.47. Both teams finished in second place at the 2012 Bison Open.

The men will have 10 runners with experience returning to the team. Anthony Bongard will compete in yellow and blue for the first time in over two years. Bongard was deployed in 2011 and he redshirted last year.

The women are returning five of the eight runners that ran at the 2012 Summit League Cross Country Championships.

The Jackrabbits are welcoming five incoming freshmen to the men’s squad, while the women have seven newcomers. The incoming freshmen for the men are: Trevor Capra, Wilson Hacker, Duane Jongeling, Daniel Petit and Brendan Sage.

Mackenzie Burke, Taylor Lohan, Brittney Schlaikjer, Marisa Shady, Lindsey Strait and Megan West are the six freshmen that have joined the Jackrabbits this fall. Tessa Stoltenburg transferred from the University of Sioux Falls and will have sophomore status.

This meet will be a good preview to see how the Jackrabbits compare to other teams in The Summit League. South Dakota and North Dakota will be running in the meet along with the Jackrabbits and the Bison.

The Jackrabbits will be back in action next weekend at the OZ Memorial. The University of Minnesota hosts the annual OZ Memorial. The OZ Memorial is set to take place at Les Bolstad Golf Course in Falcon Heights, Minn. on Friday, Sept. 6th.
