Wright earns defensive honor

ST. LOUIS — South Dakota State University cornerback Winston Wright has been named Missouri Valley Football Conference Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in the Jackrabbits' season-ending victory Nov. 12 at Western Illinois.

A sophomore from Lee's Summit, Mo., Wright recorded five tackles and forced two turnovers as the Jackrabbits recorded a 27-7 road win. Wright forced a fumble and scooped up the loose ball for a 68-yard touchdown early in the third quarter. Later in the quarter, he intercepted a pass that led to a Jackrabbit score. He also broke up a pass.

For the season, Wright led the team with three interceptions and seven pass breakups. He also ranked fifth on the team with 57 tackles.

South Dakota State ended the season with a 5-6 overall record and a 4-4 mark in the MVFC.
