Women's swimming and diving beats 'Yotes

BROOKINGS, S.D.-- The South Dakota State University women’s swimming and diving team took 11 out of 16 events in victory over the University of South Dakota on Friday night, with a final team score of the dual 178-118.

Juniors Andee Budahl and Emma Gaulke-Janowski started the scoring for the Jacks in the second women’s event of the night in the 1000-yard freestyle. Budahl was the top swimmer with a time of 10:32.97 and Gaulke-Janowski posted a time of 10:38.66 for second place. 

The pair of juniors also finished one-two the 500-yard freestyle, with Budahl in a time of 5:13.94 and Gaulke-Janowski in a time of 5:15.66. 

Budahl was also the top swimmer in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:13.96. Freshman Bianca Ninneman swam 2:15.52 to place second.

Freshman diver Olivia Olesiak had a breakout night, setting personal bests and winning both the one and three meter events. She posted scores of 246.89 in the one-meter and 241.95 in the three-meter to sweep the diving events.

The Jacks took the top three spots in the 200-yard freestyle in the very next event. Sophomore Nicole Grimit swam 1:56.94 to win the event with juniors Fawn Weihl (1:59.30) and Selina Gilbertson (1:59.57) wrapping up second and third, respectively.

SDSU also had the best three times in the 200-yard butterfly. Sophomore Trina Young (2:12.12) just edged out juniorEmma Wright (2:12.47) to take the top spot. Senior Kylie Poel was third in a time of 2:14.46. Young also captured the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:00.22.

Senior Devonne Dalin won a tight 50-yard freestyle race in a time of 24.42. 

Dalin also picked up a win in the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 53.41. Grimit (54.19) and Kaylin Caron (55.07) finished second and third in the race.

In the final event of the night, the Jacks used a team of Dalin, freshman Abby Zenner, Grimit and Caron to win the 200-yard freestyle relay in a time of 1:38.55

A pair of freshmen grabbed points for the Jacks in the 100-yard breaststroke. Kayce Smith was second in a time of 1:08.82 and Paige Weisz was third in 1:09.88.

Next up for SDSU is the Minnesota Invitational on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 in Minneapolis. The Jacks don’t have a home competition until after the winter break, with a dual against St. Cloud State (Minn.) on Jan. 19 at 2 p.m.
