The South Dakota State wrestling team sent wrestlers to the Worthington Open, a tournament for redshirt student-athletes, and crowned two champions.

Will James and Troy Morisette won titles, while Trey Hable placed second and Kevin Caruso placed fourth.

James opened the day at 141 pounds with a pin versus Nick Dahlquist (Augsburg) in 2:40, before scoring decisions versus Garret Lambrecht (Morningside) and Josh Shupe (Minnesota) to advance to the finals. In the first-place match, James won by forfeit versus Tom Kuehn (Augsburg) to win the title.

Morisette won the 174-pound title in similar fashion. After a pair of major decisions versus Brian Smith (Itasca CC) and Tanner Taylor (Augustana), Morisette received a forfeit versus Josh Kohler (Augsburg) to win the first-place match. On the day, Morisette outscored his opponents 18-2.

Hable competed in a 184-pound round robin versus three other wrestlers. Hable pinned two of the three in Chris Michael (Northwestern) and Jerrell Ferguson (MN West CTC), the first in less than 40 seconds. In the eventual championship match, Hable lost by 7-4 decision versus Uthman Rabiu (St. Cloud State) to finish in second place.

Caruso wrestled at 157 and opened the day as James did, with a first-period pin versus Dan Rodriguez (Northwestern). After scoring a 5-2 decision versus Jadon Evans (MN West CTC) in the quarterfinals, Caruso lost the semifinal match and moved into the consolation bracket. In the consolation semifinals, Caruso won another narrow decision, besting Beau Voegelis (Northern State) to advance to the third-place match. In that match, Caruso lost by decision to finish fourth.

Eric Orozco (133), Ben Schwery (165) and Wesley Grew (165) also competed at the open. Orozco scored one pin and one decision en route to a 2-2 record. Schwery also finished 2-2, with one pin and one major decision. Grew finished the day 0-2.
