The South Dakota State women’s soccer team will hit the road for the first time this season as they travel to San Antonio, Texas to take part in the University of Texas-San Antonio Tournament.

The Jackrabbits will play two games over the weekend. SDSU will play Lamar on Friday at 4 p.m. and Sam Houston State on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. The University of Texas-San Antonio is also the tournament, but will not play against SDSU.

The heat in Brookings has helped the Jackrabbits get acclimated to the forecasted weather in Texas. “We trained on Wednesday in the heat and it was certainly draining,” head coach Lang Wedemeyer noted. “It was something that challenged our mental toughness.”

RECORDS

Lamar 1-1-0

Sam Houston State 1-0-0

South Dakota State 0-2-0

THE JACKRABBITS

After a pair of 2-1 losses last weekend, the Jackrabbits have their sights set on their first win of the season. In both games last weekend the Jackrabbits surrendered the lead in the first half, but were able to score early in the second. Iowa State scored the game-winner in the closing minutes, while Loyola of Chicago scored their game-winning goal in overtime.

Throughout their first two games the Jackrabbits have outshot their opponents 24-20. The majority (15) of their shots have come in the second half. Alyssa Brazil is leading the team in points with three. Brazil is tied with Dani Patterson for the lead in goals (one). Against Iowa State, Patterson scored her first career goal.

THE CARDINALS

It didn’t take long for new head coach Orlando Cervantes to make noise at Lamar. In his first season at the helm, the Cardinals set the school record in wins with 11. Lamar is very dangerous up front as two of three leading scorers in school history are seniors. Just last week Kimmy Albeno set the school record of 19 goals in a 3-2 loss against Northern Arizona. Kristin Bos ranks third in school history with 16 goals.

The Cardinals are also solid in net. Bailey Fontenot returns as the starting keeper from last year. In 2012, she posted 114 total saves, which ranked 23rd in the nation.

This is the first meeting between the two schools.

THE BEARKATS

The Bearkats are hoping to improve their 7-11-1 finish from last season. Like SDSU, Sam Houston State had their conference’s Freshman of the Year (Kylie Hambleton). Hambleton ranked third in save percentage (.843) and fourth in shutouts (six).

Katie Ferrara will lead the offense for the Bearkats. Ferrara was named to the Southland preseason first-team. She led the Bearkats in goals last year with four.

This is the first meeting between the two schools.

UP NEXT

The Jackrabbits will return home to host the Jackrabbit Invitational on Friday (Sept. 6) and Sunday (Sept. 8). Nevada, Northern Illinois and South Dakota will also compete in the Jackrabbit Invitational. SDSU will play Nevada on Sept. 6 at 6 p.m. and Northern Illinois on Sept. 8 at 1 p.m.

South Dakota will play Northern Illinois on Sept. 6 at 3 p.m. and Nevada on Sept. 8 at 10 a.m.
