FARGO, N.D. — The South Dakota State University wrestling team was shut out in its bid for national qualifiers during action Saturday at the NCAA Division I West Regional.

Sophomore Tyler Sorenson led the Jackrabbits with a third-place finish despite being seeded first at 184 pounds. The Garretson native won three of four matches to be named first alternate for the Division I Championships March 20-22 in St. Louis.

Sorenson opened the tournament with a pin of Mike Hoopes of Wyoming in 2 minutes, 26 seconds, then had his 10-match winning streak snapped in a one-point, 9-8 loss to fourth-seeded Jacob Devlin of Air Force. Sorenson got back on the winning track in his final two matches, upping his record to 12-2 with a 14-8 decision over third-seeded Ken Moenkedick of North Dakota State and a 15-7 victory over Hoopes in the third-place match.

Returning national qualifier Ryan Meyer failed in his bid for a repeat trip to the national meet in the 165-pound weight class. After receiving a first-round bye, the third-seeded Meyer lost in a tiebreaker, 3-2, to second-seeded Eric Coxbill of Wyoming. A sophomore from Parkston, Meyer later notched a 4-1 decision over fourth-seeded Devan Lewis of Northern Colorado, before falling to Air Force’s Stephen Crozier, 6-2, in the third-place match.

The only other Jackrabbit to win a match Saturday was 141-pounder Adam Everson. A redshirt freshman from Mitchell, Everson picked up a victory over fourth-seeded Gabriel Mooney of North Dakota State in between a pair of narrow losses to second-seeded C.J. Ettelson. Scores against the UNI wrestler were 5-4 in the opening round and 8-5 in the third-place match.

Overall, the Jackrabbits went 5-17 on the day as they finished last out of six teams in the standings with 14 points. SDSU did not have a wrestler compete in the heavyweight division.

With six individual champions, Northern Iowa repeated as team champion with 119 points, followed by Air Force with 64.5. UNI claimed its 23rd consecutive regional title.
