Brookings, S.D. -- South Dakota State pitchers shutout Bemidji State on three hits as the Jackrabbits swept a baseball doubleheader from the Beavers Tuesday by identical 6-0 scores.
Christian Larson, Jr., Little Falls, Minn., pitched a complete game two-hitter in the opener, then Caleb Thielbar, Fr., Randolph, Minn., allowed one hit over six innings and Isaac Johnson, Fr., Verndale, Minn., worked a 1-2-3 seventh to finish the nitecap.
SDSU is now 20-22 overall while Bemidji dropped to 8-31. The Jacks open a four-game series at North Dakota State Friday (7 p.m.). All four games from Fargo will be broadcast live on KBRK radio with
Tyler Merriam calling the action.
Korby Mintken, So., Blair, Neb., had three hits while leadoff batter Jake Rogers, Jr., Lewiston, ID, turned two hits and two walks into four runs on the day. Kasey Keller, Sr., Rapid City, drove in three runs in the nitecap. Roger's, SDSU's shortstop, also had nine assists and two putouts defensively without an error.
Game One - Larson allowed two hits, walked one and struckout two as he improved to 2-1 for the season and dropped his team leading earned run average to 3.60.
The Jacks scored six runs, all in the first two innings, on just three hits as BSU pitchers contributed seven walks and two hit batters to the cause.
The Jacks scored three times in the first inning. Rogers walked and went to third on a single by Mintken. Tyson Fisher, So., Fortuna, Calif., delivered an RBI single to right to score Rogers. Cal Lewis, Jr., Carson City, Nev., walked to load the bases and Justin Morar, So., Omaha, Neb., was hit by a pitch to force in one run, then Tim Hanigan, So., Lincoln, Neb., delivered a sacrifice fly to to center to score Fisher with the third run of the inning.
In the third, SDSU scored three more on just one hit. Rogers walked and stole second. Then Fisher walked and they moved up on a double steal. Nick Adams, So., Lenexa, Kan., singled to score both runs and he ended up on third after Bemidji threw the ball away on a rundown between first and second. Adams scored on a passed ball.
The Jacks were hitless after the second inning. Bemidjis hits were a single by Casey Allar in the third and a single by Eric Pilgrim to lead off the seventh.
Game Two - Thielbar allowed just one hit, a two-out single by Matt Middendorf down the left field line in the sixth inning. Middendorf was thrown out at second base by Mintken as he tried to stretch the hit into a double.
SDSU took the lead in the second. Adams singled and Cal Lewis walked before both advanced on a double steal. Adams scored on a sacrifice fly by Keller.
The Jacks added four more in the third. Rogers doubled and scored on a triple by Mintken, who scored on a wild pitch. After Fisher walked and Adams was hit by a pitch, Keller delivered a two-run single to right center.
The final Jackrabbit run, in the fourth, scored on a sacrifice fly by Fisher.
