PHILADELPHIA — South Dakota State University wide receiver Jake Wieneke finished as runner-up in the voting for the 2014 Jerry Rice Award as the top freshman in the Football Championship Subdivision, Sports Network officials announced Monday.
A native of Maple Grove, Minnesota, Wieneke averaged 19.7 yards every time he touched the ball during his redshirt freshman season in 2014, tallying 73 receptions for 1,404 yards and 16 touchdowns through the air while adding 52 rushing yards. His reception and receiving yard totals were the second most in a season in school history, while his 16 touchdowns set a new SDSU single-season mark and tied the Missouri Valley Football Conference record.
The MFVC Freshman of the Year and a first-team all-conference performer, Wieneke caught at least one touchdown pass in all eight league games and topped the 100-yard mark seven times.
Fordham (N.Y.) running back Chase Edmonds, who rushed for 1,838 yards and scored 23 touchdowns in 14 games, was to be presented with the Jerry Rice Award during the FCS Awards Banquet Monday night. Edmonds was named on 140 ballots and received 95 first-place votes en route to a total of 625 points. Wieneke received a vote on 109 of 160 ballots, including 17 first-place votes.
Wieneke is the third Jackrabbit to be named a finalist in the four-year history of the Jerry Rice Award. Quarterback Austin Sumner placed third in 2011, while linebacker T.J. Lally finished seventh in the balloting in 2012.
