KOKOMO, Ind. – South Dakota State struck for six runs in two separate innings and went on to defeat Fort Wayne, 18-5 in seven innings, in a Summit League baseball series opener Saturday at Kokomo Municipal Stadium.
The Jackrabbits set season highs with their 18 runs and 17 hits in improving to 6-18 overall and 3-4 in league play. Fort Wayne dropped to 1-6 in The Summit League and 12-14 overall. Saturday's scheduled second game was postponed so the two squads will attempt to complete the three-game series with a doubleheader Sunday starting at 11 a.m. Eastern (10 a.m. Central) in Kokomo.
SDSU got out of the gates quickly, sending 11 men to the plate and scoring six times in the top of the first inning.
Jesse Munsterman doubled in the first two runs of the inning and
Newt Johnson added a two-run single.
Fort Wayne cut the deficit in half in the home half of the first on a three-run home run by Shane Trevino, but the Jackrabbits answered with three runs in the third and six more in the fourth.
Luke Ringhofer, who extended his hitting streak to 12 games, singled in the final run of the third and capped the scoring in the fourth with a two-run single. Â
Cody Sharrow and
Paul Jacobson added run-scoring doubles in the fourth.
Ringhofer, who finished the game with four runs batted in, was one of four Jackrabbits with three hits in the game.
Nick Smith and Munsterman each tallied three hits and three RBI, while Jacobson had a pair of doubles among his three hits.
Newt Johnson contributed two hits, three RBI and four runs scored for SDSU.

Andrew Clemen struck out five over five innings to earn his second win of the season.
Ethan Kenkel allowed one run and fanned two batters over the final two innings.
Fort Wayne hurler Evan Miller lasted only three innings, allowing nine runs on seven hits and issuing six walks.
Greg Kaiser, who hit a solo home run to lead off the fifth inning, was one of four Mastodon players with two hits. Jonathan Reece added a solo homer in the sixth.
