Former South Dakota State University women's soccer student-athlete Diana Potterveld has been nominated by The Summit League for the 2016 NCAA Woman of the Year Award.
Â
Potterveld and North Dakota State softball student-athlete Cheyenne Garcia were selected to represent The Summit League and are among 142 female student-athletes who remain in the running for one of the organization's most prestigious awards. A total of 517 female student-athletes were nominated from all three NCAA divisions.
Â
A native of Fort Collins, Colorado, Potterveld, who graduated this past spring with a perfect 4.0 grade-point average while majoring in biology, was named Summit League Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year earlier this month. She was an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipient, a Capital One Academic All-America and All-District first-team selection and a three-time member of The Summit League All-Academic Team. Potterveld was honored all four years on The Summit League Commissioner's List of Academic Excellence and was a four-time Distinguished Scholar on The Summit League Honor Roll.
Â
On the field, the forward helped the Jackrabbits to back-to-back NCAA College Cup appearances and two Summit League championship titles. She was named the 2015 Summit League Championship Most Valuable Player and was a two-time all-tournament selection.
Â
Potterveld was also named the 2014 Summit League Offensive Player of the Year and in 2012 the Summit League Freshman of the Year. She was a three-time first-team all-Summit League selection and was honored on the 2012 Summit League All-Freshman Team.
Â
Of the 142 female student-athletes recognized by their conferences, 54 are from Division I, 37 in Division II and 51 in Division III. In early September, the Woman of the Year selection committee will name the Top 30 honorees, representing the top 10 women in each division. The selection committee will then choose and announce the nine finalists, with three from each division, at the end of September. The Top 30 honorees will be celebrated and the 2016 NCAA Woman of the Year will be named at a banquet Oct. 16 in Indianapolis.
