The Jackrabbit women's soccer team heads East this weekend for two non-conference matchups. South Dakota State takes on Wisconsin this Friday, Sept. 9 at 5 p.m., before closing the trip at Green Bay on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 1 p.m.
Scouting the Badgers
Wisconsin enters the weekend at 1-2-3, claiming its lone win against Illinois State while notching draws against Milwaukee, Drake and Santa Clara. The Badgers' two losses have come against No. 20 Notre Dame and No. 2 Stanford. The Badgers have scored four goals this season, including two from points leader Micaela Powers while Emily Borgman (one assist) and Dani Rhodes also have goals. Sydney McGinnis has the other Wisconsin assist. Among position players, midfielder Rose Lavelle (a 2015 NSCAA First Team All-American) leads the team with 581 minutes played while firing 20 shots (10 on goal). Caitlyn Clem has played all 600 minutes in net for the Badgers this season with five goals allowed and 22 saves, posting a 0.75 goals against average. This is the third meeting all-time between the schools with SDSU looking for its first ever win, trailing 0-2-1 in the series. The Jacks tied Wisconsin, 0-0, in 2010 before dropping consecutive 5-0 matches in 2012 and 2014. All three contests have come on the road.
Scouting the Phoenix
Winless through its first six games, Green Bay hosts South Dakota State in a Sunday matchup to close the weekend. The Phoenix have scored one goal this season, and have allowed nine. Green Bay has played just one road contest so far this season with five home games to start the year. Maggie Fuller notched Green Bay's lone goal off an assist from Leah Nitardy in a los toAkron on Aug. 21. In net, Courtney Klatt (four goals allowed, 1.20 goals against average) and Kelly Kent (five goals allowed, 1.67 GAA) have split time for the Phoenix. The Jacks hold a 5-2 record in their all-time series with Green Bay, winning the previous five matchups after consecutive losses in 2005 and 2006. For the series, SDSU is 2-1 on the road and 3-1 at home, outscoring the Phoenix 7-4 over the seven matchups.
Last Time Out
In a game where 17 total fouls were called and its opponent was issued four yellow cards, South Dakota State fell short in a 2-1 contest against Creighton on Sunday afternoon. SDSU saw its three-match unbeaten streak come to an end while Creighton moved to 3-1-2 for the season. The Jackrabbits were outshot on the day, 16-9, in part because of a 10-1 halftime deficit in the category, but scored first in the contest before the Bluejays answered with two in the span of five minutes. Taking the wind for the second half, the Jacks struck in the opening minute of the second half to lead 1-0. Annie Williams crossed the ball from the top right side of the box towards a crashing Jennie Scislow, who found it with her head and put it past CU's keeper. That SDSU lead was short-lived, however, as Creighton answered with an equalizer in the 48th minute, and an eventual game-winner in the 49th minute. Inside five minutes to play, SDSU looked for an equalizer of its own with three corner kicks in the span of two minutes, but couldn't capitalize.
Power Five Performances
South Dakota State has a difficult non-conference schedule once again this season with three Power Five schools for the year. SDSU dropped a 1-0 contest at Iowa State (Big Ten) this year before drawing 1-1 against Kansas (Big 12) at home. The next Power Five opponent for the Jacks is Wisconsin (Big Ten), which takes place this weekend. In addition to those three, SDSU also had a non-conference game with Creighton, out of the BIG EAST.
Smither Earns Weekly Honor
South Dakota State women's soccer's Maggie Smither was named Summit League Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week, announced Tuesday, Sept. 6 by the conference office. Smither earned her first ever Player of the Week award after putting together 90 shutout minutes in the net over two games. Smither had five saves total over the two games, logging one save against North Dakota and four against Creighton while facing 10 shots against the Bluejays. Smither also recorded her first two career starts and has yet to allow a goal with 14 saves over 200 total minutes this season. While Smither earned the defensive honors, Fort Wayn'es Kalliane Mogler and North Dakota State's Holly Enderle split the offensive award.
Extra Time
SDSU's 1-0 win over North Dakota marked its second double overtime contest in as many games earlier this season. Historically, the Jacks have played well in overtime periods, claiming a 17-14-36 mark in combined games between single and double overtimes. The Jacks are 7-9 all-time in single overtime contests and 10-5-36 in double overtime. The most overtime games in a season for SDSU was 12 in 2003. Since moving to the Division I level, SDSU's overtime high is six, which came last season.
Set Piece Success Madison Yueill had two goals last weekend with both coming on set piece efforts. In the 3-0 win against Northern Iowa, Yueill curved a corner kick into the net from the left side past an outstretched keeper and against Kansas, Yueill fired a free kick from the top left corner of the box into the net to help the Jacks draw 1-1 with Kansas.
Offensive Breakout
Held without a goal in the first two contests, SDSU has now scored in four consecutive games entering this weekend. The Jacks erupted for three in a win over Northern Iowa and one against Kansas two weeks ago. Last week, the Jacks scored one against both North Dakota and Creighton. In that span, Madison Yueill had two goals to lead the team while Kyli Nelson, Shelby Raper, Tori Poole and Jennie Scislow each have one. In the assist column, Nicole Hatcher leads the team with two as Nelson, Raper and Annie Williams have also notched assists.
Chart Climber
Goalkeeper Nicole Inskeep has picked up nine saves through six games this year and is now alone in the third overall spot for career saves with 204, passing Jenn Davis (202 saves) who played for the Jacks from 2003-06. Inskeep is 63 saves away from No. 2 on the list and 65 saves back from tying the school record.
Second Half Shutdown
South Dakota State's defense has allowed just two second half goals through six games this season, and only five goals for the year overall. The Jacks opened the season without allowing a second half goal in the first five games.Â
Eyes on the Prize
Despite going winless through the openingtwo games, the Jackrabbits have proven over the years it's not how you start, but how you finish. Since joining the NCAA Division I ranks in 2004, SDSU has gone 0-2 to open a season six times but has finished with a losing record just once, earning a trip to the NCAA College Cup in two of those seasons.
Inskeep named to Watch List
Senior goalkeeper Nicole Inskeep was named to The Summit League's Watch List as part of the preseason coaches poll release. The second-team All-Summit League selection from a year ago led the league in save percentage (.833) and goals-against average (1.82) while collecting five shutouts against league members. The two-time Summit League Tournament defending champions earned two first-place votes and 56 points in the poll ... Summit League regular-season champion North Dakota State was tabbed the preseason favorite with seven first-place votes and 63 points. The complete poll can be found on page three of the game notes.
