WOODSTOCK, Ga. ? South Dakota State split a pair of games on Saturday at the Buzz Classic just outside of Atlanta, Georgia, but did not qualify for tournament play.
Game 1 against Radford (Va.) featured a pitchers' duel with the Jackrabbits' Kim Westendorf and the Highlanders' Bre Felix playing the leading roles.
Through six full innings, only Westendorf gave up a hit, but it did not harm the team, as the Jacks got out of the inning unscathed.
Radford got its second and third hits in the top of the seventh, the third hit, a two-RBI double by Alex Roderick, put the Highlanders on top 2-0.
Down by two runs and hitless going into the bottom of the seventh, Samantha Heinzman broke up the no-hitter with a lead-off single up the middle, but the Jacks could not capitalize.
Westendorf pitched a complete game three-hitter with three strikeouts and a walk, but took the loss.
Felix earned with the win with a complete game one-hitter, she struck out nine and walked one.
Things went a little better for the Jacks in their second game of the day, when they took on Georgetown.
With two outs in the third, Amanda Fedson drew a walk and stole second to get things started for the Jacks.
On the next at-bat, Denise Leon singled up the middle and advanced to third on a throwing error that allowed Fedson to score easily from second to put the Jacks up 1-0.
It stayed 1-0 until the Jacks half of the seventh. Brooke Postma led off with a single and stole her fifth base in as many tries to get into scoring position. Two batters later, Teresa Howell hit an RBI single up the middle that scored Postma, and gave the Jacks a much need insurance run and a 2-0 lead.
Much needed, because the Hoyas pushed one run across in the bottom of the seventh before running out of outs.
Jenna Marston scattered five hits and gave up one run in a complete game win, her first of the season. Marston struck out seven and walked one.
